Ferrari SF90 (Stradale and Spider) buying guide

The SF90 is a hybrid Ferrari with few mechanical worries but a turbo oil pipe recall, fussy electronics and a battery that dislikes sitting idle.

The SF90 as a used buy

The Ferrari SF90 is a car where the paperwork matters as much as the paint. Check that the turbo oil pipe recall was done and that the hybrid system has a documented service history before you look at anything else.

Ferrari unveiled the Stradale coupe in May 2019 as its first plug-in hybrid with the engine behind the driver, and the Spider with its retractable hardtop followed in late 2020. Power comes from a 3,990cc twin-turbo V8 and three electric motors, 1,000 PS combined, through an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox and all-wheel drive. exoticcarhacks.com quotes 986 hp and 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, plus up to 16 miles on electric power alone.

PistonHeads sums it up as a car with no major mechanical shortcomings but some electrical issues, and poor luggage space. Production was limited to 799 coupes and 599 Spiders, and Ferrari announced the end of the run in August 2024, with the 849 Testarossa as its replacement. SF90 years and versions

Two bodies are tracked here: the SF90 Stradale coupe and the SF90 Spider convertible. The more performance-focused SF90 XX is a separate model with its own guide.

The option to look for is the Assetto Fiorano pack, released in the second half of 2021. PistonHeads lists GT3-derived Multimatic passive dampers, titanium springs, a titanium exhaust and carbon door panels and underbody parts, saving 30kg. It also brought a more pronounced carbon rear spoiler, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tyres could be fitted instead of the regular Cup 2s.

carcollectorinternational.com says the pack's content varies between cars, so confirm what a given car actually has against the dealer's records. Those same sources point to continuous dealer service history, documented hybrid records and original specification as what separates the strongest cars. Our SF90 Stradale price guide and SF90 Spider price guide show how the market treats each body. Cross-shoppers can read Stradale against the 296 GTB.

Common SF90 problems

Most reports concern electronics and the hybrid system rather than the V8 and gearbox.

Turbo oil pipe recall

The turbocharger oil delivery pipes can leak oil, with a potential fire risk, on 2022-2024 cars. PistonHeads says the recall dates from the third quarter of 2023 and that no actual fires were reported. The fix is free replacement of the left and right pipes, and dealers must not deliver affected pre-owned cars until it is done.

Hybrid system warnings

CarChecker reports hybrid fault messages, including a dealer-visit prompt and an eDrive unavailable notice, which resets, software patches or code clearing mostly cured. An 'engine recrank not ensured' warning can leave the car immobile, and a new AGM battery cured one car.

Flat 12V battery

CarChecker says the 12V battery can drain within days to weeks of inactivity and leave the car unresponsive, and advises a trickle charger. A car that has sat in a collection is worth querying.

High-voltage battery degradation

CarChecker also reports that the high-voltage battery can fail or degrade if the car sits unused for 2-3 months. Ask how the car was stored and used.

Infotainment dropouts

Phone disconnections and CarPlay dropouts over Bluetooth or cable were reported, especially before 2023. Software updates in the second quarter of 2023 seemed to help.

Display blackouts

The displays either side of the tacho and the passenger display can black out. Both PistonHeads and exoticcarhacks.com mention it.

ADAS errors

Driver-assist error messages are reported, with low beam failure and traffic sign recognition warnings the most frequent.

Spider roof and damper leaks

A Spider owner saw a roof-related WLM fault message right after the top closed. Separately, magnetorheological dampers leak on other Ferraris after roughly 40,000-60,000 km, though widespread SF90 failures have not been documented.

What to check on a used SF90

Spend the money on a Ferrari dealer inspection, and cover these points.

  • Verify the chassis number, specification and options, including any Assetto Fiorano pack, against the authorized dealer's records and delivery paperwork.
  • Ask for proof that the turbo oil pipe recall was completed if the car was built from 2022 to 2024.
  • Confirm battery state, hybrid-system service history and the software update record through an authorized Ferrari dealer.
  • Check the carbon-ceramic brake condition against the service book.
  • Insist on a cold start and a test drive of 30 minutes or more in all modes to catch intermittent faults.
  • Look at each magnetorheological damper for oil misting or leaking lower seals.
  • Cycle the roof on a Spider and watch for warning messages afterward.
  • Ask how long the car sat unused and whether it was kept on a trickle charger.
  • Run the infotainment, CarPlay and all displays for blackouts or dropouts.

SF90 running costs

PistonHeads says Ferrari offers seven years of free scheduled servicing, transferable to later owners and extendable yearly to the car's 15th birthday. Check what remains on the car you are viewing. exoticcarhacks.com puts an oil change from about $400 at an independent or $1000 at a dealer, a minor service from about $1,700 and a major service from about $3,500.

CarChecker estimates standalone high-voltage battery replacement at €15,000-30,000, citing roughly £21,000 from one source. It puts a leaking damper at about €1,500-2,000 each and an AGM battery at €300-500. PistonHeads notes that UK cars carry a four-year warranty with hybrid components covered for five years, and cover can be extended to include battery replacement in years 8 and 16.

SF90 recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds two recall campaigns for these model years. One covers 2022-2024 SF90 Stradale and Spider cars where the turbocharger oil delivery pipe may have been made incorrectly, which can cause an oil leak. The other covers 2021-2023 Stradale and 2022 Spider cars, where a deploying passenger airbag may hit a child seat fitted in the passenger seat. A recall for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed no complaints with NHTSA for these model years.

Our verdict

Buy the SF90 on its history, not its badge. A car with a continuous dealer service record, documented hybrid and software history, the oil pipe recall done and original specification is the one to pay for. An Assetto Fiorano car is worth seeking if it is verified as such, but the pack varies, so prove it.

Skip any car that has sat unused for months without a charger, or whose owner cannot explain the warning messages. Insist on a long cold-start drive in every mode, with the dealer's battery report in hand.

SF90: common questions

What is the best SF90 to buy?

Pick the car with the best documentation rather than a specific year. Continuous dealer service history, hybrid records and original specification mark the strongest cars, and a verified Assetto Fiorano pack adds lighter parts and GT3-derived dampers.

What goes wrong with the SF90?

Mostly electrical and hybrid-system faults. Reports include display blackouts, ADAS errors, CarPlay dropouts, hybrid warnings and flat 12V batteries. There is also a recall on the turbo oil delivery pipes for 2022-2024 cars.

Is the SF90 reliable?

Mostly, with caveats. PistonHeads finds no major mechanical shortcomings but some electrical issues. Check the turbo pipe recall was completed and how the car was stored, since the batteries dislike sitting idle.

How much does it cost to run an SF90?

Ferrari offers seven years of free scheduled servicing, transferable and extendable. exoticcarhacks.com puts a minor service from about $1,700 and a major from about $3,500. CarChecker estimates a high-voltage battery at €15,000-30,000 and a damper at €1,500-2,000.

How much is a used SF90?

Asking prices for the 70 cars we track for sale right now run from $393,076 to $753,075, with a median of $559,950. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the SF90 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2021 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for engine and engine cooling. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
