Porsche 718 Cayman (982) buying guide

Used 718 Cayman buyers choose between turbo fours and 4.0 flat-sixes, and Stuttcars and Hagerty both point to the GTS 4.0 as the one to find.

The 718 Cayman as a used buy

A used 718 Cayman (982) comes with a turbo flat-four or, from 2020, a 4.0-liter flat-six, and which one you pick decides how the car drives and what you check before buying. The 2017 model year replaced the 981's naturally aspirated flat-sixes with turbo fours in the base car and the S. The line ended after the 2025 model year, the last combustion Cayman.

Hagerty considers the 982 a mid-cycle update of the 981 despite the new model code. The flat-six cars start with the GTS 4.0 and the GT4, and PistonHeads says they sound better than the fours. The GT4 RS, from 2022, takes a 493-hp flat-six from the 911 GT3 and comes only with PDK.

PistonHeads rates the reliability record as very good and adds that extended warranties are affordable. The expensive exception is a PDK that has not been serviced properly. If you want to see what is out there, start with used 718 Caymans for sale.

718 Cayman years and versions

The base car has a 2.0-liter turbo four with 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, with a six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK. The S has a 2.5-liter turbo four with 350 hp and 309 lb-ft. The 2018-19 GTS lifted the 2.5 to 365 hp, and Hagerty says it was seen as a slightly hotter S because much of its hardware could be had as an S upgrade. We list the base Coupe and the S Coupe separately.

The Cayman T arrived in 2019 on the 2.0-liter engine with a more focused chassis. PistonHeads suggests the 2019-on T could be the best all-round model, and Hagerty lists PASM, a limited-slip differential, Sport Chrono and Carrera wheels among its additions. Be careful with earlier cars advertised as a T: PistonHeads says they may just be turbocharged, and a real one carries T lettering on the tailgate and sill plates.

The GTS 4.0 arrived in 2020 with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six making 394 hp and 317 lb-ft, shared with the GT4. Stuttcars and Hagerty both single it out as the model to look for in the range. It revs to between 7,800 and 8,000 rpm depending on gearbox, and Hagerty notes the 4.0 manual has tall gearing, with second topping out near 85 mph and third at 121 mph.

The GT4 tunes the same 4.0 to 414 hp, with a six-speed manual as standard and PDK added in 2021. Stuttcars says carbon bucket seats and PCCB ceramic brakes are worth seeking if the car will see track use. We list the GT4 Coupe and the GT4 RS Coupe. On base and S cars, Hagerty rates Sport Chrono, PASM and PTV as the options to want, and pcarwise.com treats an S fitted with sport seats, PDK, Sport Chrono and PASM as a GTS in all but name.

Common 718 Cayman problems

PDK neglect

A PDK that has missed its servicing can become a weak point, and pcarwise.com puts a replacement at north of $20K. Ask for the gearbox service history before you drive an automatic.

Oil consumption

Owners of the 2.0 and 2.5 turbo fours sometimes report the engine using more oil, according to autojunket.com. Check the level at the viewing and ask how often the car needs topping up.

Turbo-four rattles

Carpokes notes the occasional report of a rattling wastegate on early four-cylinder cars, both 2.0 and 2.5. The sports exhaust valve actuator can also rattle on some cars.

Connecting rod recall

Recall campaign 21V200 deals with the connecting rods on some 2021 cars with the 4.0 flat-six, the GTS 4.0 and the GT4, as renndriver.com records it. Recalls are VIN specific, so confirm that a given car was covered and the work done.

Cooling system leaks

Water pump and cooling system problems are possible. Look for coolant leaks and any sign of overheating.

Manual gearbox grind

Manual cars may grind when shifting from first to second.

Trim and infotainment

Alcantara on the steering wheel and seat bolsters may wear smooth, some switchgear coatings may peel, and headliners can sag, especially in hot climates. The PCM infotainment can also have occasional software glitches.

What to check on a used 718 Cayman

Most of this can be done at a viewing, but a Porsche specialist with the right tools is worth paying for.

  • Have a specialist read fault codes, over-revs and DME mileage on a PIWIS computer, and compare that mileage with the dash.
  • Ask what over-rev level is logged, since levels run from 1 to 6 and a recent high one deserves scrutiny and can affect warranty.
  • Measure the brake discs and pads against Porsche Club GB's guidance of no edge lip over 1mm and pad material over 3mm, and treat new discs and pads on a car showing 10K miles as a warning about the mileage.
  • Ask for PDK service records on any automatic before you consider the rest of the car.
  • On a cold start, listen for rattles from the exhaust valve and the turbo area.
  • Look under the car and in the engine bay for coolant leaks, then watch the temperature gauge on the drive.
  • Shift a manual from first to second slowly, cold and again when warm, and listen for grinding.
  • Switch PASM from Normal to Sport during the drive and note how the ride changes.
  • Inspect the headliner, the Alcantara wheel and bolsters and the switchgear coatings for sagging, shine or peeling.
  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for paperwork on any recall work, including 21V200 on a 2021 GTS 4.0 or GT4.
  • Look for T lettering on the tailgate and sill plates if the car is sold as a T.

718 Cayman running costs

Budget first for the PDK. pcarwise.com puts replacement at north of $20K, so a documented gearbox service history matters more than low mileage. PistonHeads says extended warranties are affordable given the car's reliability record, and puts two years of Porsche Approved Warranty at about £1,400, a UK figure.

Porsche Club GB gives wheel refurbishment at £100-150 per wheel, also a UK figure. Our 718 Cayman price guide covers what the cars cost to buy.

718 Cayman recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists five recall campaigns for 2017 to 2027 718 Caymans. Two cover the fuel system on 2017 to 2019 cars, and three cover air bags on 2017 and 2018 cars. A campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 12 complaints with NHTSA. The largest group, 6, concerns the engine, followed by the power train (4) and seat belts (3). They are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Look for a GTS 4.0 first: Stuttcars and Hagerty both single it out, and its flat-six makes 394 hp. If you want a four-cylinder, PistonHeads points to the 2019-on Cayman T, and pcarwise.com's well-optioned S is the alternative. Skip a turbo four with an unclear oil history, and walk away from any car with a high over-rev reading. If you are weighing a bigger Porsche, our 718 Cayman vs 911 comparison covers it.

Insist on a PIWIS read-out and full service records, with PDK servicing documented on every automatic. On a GT4 destined for the track, hold out for carbon bucket seats and PCCB ceramic brakes.

718 Cayman: common questions

What is the best 718 Cayman to buy?

The GTS 4.0 is the one to look for, going by Stuttcars and Hagerty. It has the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six with 394 hp, and the GT4 uses the same engine tuned to 414 hp. If you want a four-cylinder, PistonHeads suggests the 2019-on Cayman T.

What goes wrong with the 718 Cayman?

Reported faults are mostly small: wastegate and exhaust valve rattles, extra oil use on the turbo fours, worn Alcantara and sagging headliners. A PDK that has not been serviced is the costly one, north of $20K to replace according to pcarwise.com. A 2021 recall, campaign 21V200, concerns connecting rods on some GTS 4.0 and GT4 cars.

Is the 718 Cayman reliable?

Yes, according to PistonHeads, which calls the reliability record very good and says extended warranties are affordable. NHTSA lists five recall campaigns and 12 owner complaints, which are reports rather than proven faults. A PDK without proper servicing is the weak point.

How much does it cost to run a 718 Cayman?

The biggest cost to plan for is a PDK replacement on a neglected car, north of $20K per pcarwise.com. PistonHeads puts two years of Porsche Approved Warranty at about £1,400, and Porsche Club GB gives wheel refurbishment at £100-150 per wheel, both UK figures.

How much is a used 718 Cayman?

Asking prices for the 190 cars we track for sale right now run from $38,489 to $301,997, with a median of $76,110. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the 718 Cayman been recalled?

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns filed for the 2017 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
