BMW M3 (E30) buying guide
The E30 M3 is a durable homologation special, but fake Sport Evo conversions, rust and hard track use matter more than any version choice when you buy one.
The E30 M3 as a used buy
Any E30 M3 sold as a Sport Evolution needs proof, because many standard cars have been converted to that spec and only 600 are genuine. Many of these cars were also tracked or driven hard, so a clean body and a documented service record should settle the shortlist. Hagerty and Magneto both put condition and history first.
BMW built it as a DTM touring-car homologation special, introduced at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show. The U.S. market got it in 1988, and production ran through the 1991 model year. Sales came to 5115 in America and just over 17,000 worldwide.
Autocar and Magneto put the weight at around 1200kg. The S14 is a four-cylinder with a 7250-rpm redline, and the wider fenders, re-angled rear glass and rear spoiler cut the drag coefficient from 0.38 to 0.33. To see what is listed, browse used M3s for sale or go through every E30 M3 for sale.
E30 M3 years and versions
U.S. cars arrived in 1988 with a conventional H-pattern five-speed, overdrive fifth and a 4.10:1 final drive, rather than the European dogleg gearbox. Every M3 gets a clutch-type limited-slip differential and four-disc brakes with Bosch ABS.
Changes arrived in mid-1989: halogen lamps replaced the earlier headlights, the quarter windows became fixed, the front control arms went aluminum and the steering wheel became the M-Technic II design. Power was 212 hp even with a catalyst. A driver's airbag followed on U.S. cars in September 1989, along with a four-spoke wheel.
The EVO I and EVO II (215 and 220 hp) were never sold in the U.S. The Sport Evolution (EVO III) makes 235 hp, with only 600 built in Glossy Black or Brilliant Red. Car Collector International warns that many standard M3s have been converted to Sport Evo spec, and that only the 600 cars on the BMW Group Classic register are genuine, so demand a BMW Classic Certificate.
Special editions include the Europameister, the Cecotto (505 units) and the UK-only Ravaglia (25 units). Magneto says they mostly offer unique paint, signed plaques and trim, and that the real performance difference across the years is minimal. It also rates convertibles (786 built, 1988 to 1991) as generally less desirable than coupes. For other M3 generations, see our E36 M3 buying guide or the E46 M3 buying guide.

Common E30 M3 problems
Cylinder head porosity
Some cars had porous castings in the exhaust ports, which can leak into the exhaust. Classic Motorsports notes that a new head is expensive.
Overheating
A failed head gasket or dead radiator fans will send the temperature up. Both are on Magneto's list of faults.
Exhaust manifold studs
Broken manifold studs are a common problem, per Classic Motorsports. Listen for a ticking exhaust leak on a cold start.
Oil leaks and mounts
Oil leaks are common, Hagerty says. The S14 can also be hard on its engine mounts, which makes the cabin buzzy.
Gearbox synchros
A notchy shift can point to worn synchros, which cost a lot to replace. Classic Driver makes the same warning.
Rear shock mounts
Expect to replace the rear shock mounts, which tend to have short lives.
Dash and battery damage
Dashboards can crack. On the SII, a corroded battery can also damage the back of the dash, a risk Prestige & Performance Car flags.
What to check on a used E30 M3
Start with the body and the paperwork, then the engine.
- Ask for a BMW Classic Certificate on any car sold as a Sport Evolution.
- Check the VIN and look for missing M3-specific interior parts and original equipment.
- Probe for rust around the license-plate lights, sunroof drains, frame rails, wheel arches, rocker panels, rear subframe, shock towers, floorpans and battery tray.
- Look for accident repairs around the radiator support and inside the trunk, since many were tracked or driven hard.
- Look for a dent in the roof, which can point to heavy track use without a roll cage.
- Check the wheels are M3-specific: factory rims use a +24 mm offset, and special editions +27 mm.
- Book a compression and leakdown test and a cooling system pressure test to check the head, gasket and cooling circuit.
- Watch the oil pressure at idle, because a low reading can mean worn main bearings or a tired oil pump.
- Press the brake pedal and feel for sponginess, which can indicate a leaking master cylinder.
- Run through every gear, including a cold change, and note any notchiness that suggests synchro wear.
- Ask for records of valve adjustments and timing chain work.
E30 M3 running costs
Valve adjustments are due every 30,000 miles and the work is labor intensive, according to Hagerty, Magneto and Classic Motorsports. Magneto puts timing chain replacement at every 100,000 miles.
A rebuild is the big bill. Squeezed gives $5,000-8,000 for an S14 rebuild, while Hagerty's 3 Series guide says roughly $12,000 to $15,000. A leaking cylinder head or worn synchros add to the exposure.

Our verdict
Find a coupe with a full service history. Magneto rates convertibles as generally less desirable, and says special editions mostly add paint and trim, so a standard coupe gives you the same performance without paying for a plaque. Treat any Sport Evolution as unproven until it comes with a BMW Classic Certificate. Check the BMW M3 price guide once you have a car in mind.
Hagerty says the S14 is probably the most durable of the E30 engines and can reach 300,000 miles with good maintenance, so records of valve adjustments and timing chain work count for more than a special-edition plaque. Walk away from rust in the rails, shock towers or battery tray, and insist on a compression and leakdown test before you pay.
