BMW M3 (F80) buying guide
The F80 M3 is the first turbocharged M3, and the split that matters used is between cars built before BMW's March 2017 crank hub revision and those after.
The F80 M3 as a used buy
Buying an F80 M3 means choosing between cars built before and after March 2017, when BMW revised the S55 engine's crank hub without a recall. Earlier cars carry more risk, and what you can prove about their history counts for more.
The F80 covers model years 2015 to 2018. It was unveiled in January 2014, launched for 2015 and is the first turbocharged M3. It is also the first M3 sold only as a sedan, since the two-door became the M4. Power comes from the S55 twin-turbo six, with a carbon-fiber roof and an aluminum hood and front fenders.
Drive goes to the rear wheels only, through a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (M-DCT). Our E90, E92, E93 M3 guide covers the generation it replaced, and the G80 M3 guide covers the one that followed. To see what is listed now, browse used F80 M3s for sale.
F80 M3 years and versions
The base car makes 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. 0-60 mph takes 4.1 seconds with the manual and 3.9 with the DCT. CarScout notes that only 15% of production was manual, and calls the manual both the reliability pick and the rarity pick.
LED taillights arrived on 2016 models with the summer 2015 update. The Competition Package also dates from 2016 and brings 444 hp, revised suspension, adaptive suspension, differential and stability control tuning, and new front seats. The March 2017 update gave 2018 cars restyled LED headlights, and final-year cars added an 8.8-inch iDrive 6 touchscreen and a click-into-place indicator stalk.
The M3 CS arrived for 2018 with 453 hp and 443 lb-ft. It is DCT only, and about 1,200 were built worldwide. Its carbon parts don't save weight, though: BMW told Car and Driver the CS weighs the same as a regular M3 with the DCT, so buy it for the power and rarity. Our used M3 CS listings show what is out there.
Every 2018 car and every CS has the revised crank hub from the factory. CarScout rates the 2018 as the best of the run, citing that hub, the LED headlights, no recalls on the 2018 record and the CS on offer, and it also favors a late-build 2017 Competition for the same hub and the 444 hp chassis. CarBuzz notes that a glass moonroof was a no-cost option that deleted the carbon-fiber roof, so check which roof a car has. Carbon ceramic brakes are costly to service and overkill on the street, according to CarScout and Squeezed. The F80 M3 Sedan market page breaks the sedans down by model year.

Common F80 M3 problems
PistonHeads reports the S55 as reliable apart from one weakness, so that is where the list starts.
Crank hub slip
The S55 crank hub is held by a bolt and a friction taper fit, with no keyway or pin. It can slip, upsetting timing and possibly causing piston-to-valve contact. Warning signs are a check engine light, limp mode and a rough idle, and a slip logs crank-to-cam correlation faults.
Failure rate estimates
Published figures for crank hub failure vary a lot. Pages put it below 0.5% of owners or below 10% of S55 engines, while Squeezed estimates 5-10% on stock cars and 20-30% or more on tuned ones. Earlier cars carry more risk because the revision came in March 2017.
Charge pipe cracks
The plastic charge pipes fitted at the factory crack, which lets boost escape and sends the car into limp mode. BimmerBench is among the sources that flag them.
Charge air cooler leaks
A crack inside the charge air cooler can let coolant into the intake, which risks hydrolock. CarChecker lists coolant loss, white smoke and misfires as the signs.
Oil seepage
Gaskets on the oil filter housing, valve cover and oil pan leak on higher-mileage cars.
Intake carbon buildup
Direct injection leaves carbon on the intake valves, and the result is rough running and misfire codes.
DCT mechatronic unit
The dual-clutch's mechatronic unit can fail, and clunky cold shifts are a common owner report. A 2016 service bulletin also extended the warranty on the S55 leak diagnosis module to 10 years or 120,000 miles.
What to check on a used F80 M3
- Ask for invoices showing whether the crank hub was upgraded and by whom.
- Confirm the build date against the March 2017 revision.
- Cold start the engine and listen for rattle, rough idle or misfires.
- Scan for stored fault codes with a tool that reads BMW systems, and look for crank-to-cam correlation entries in particular.
- Squeeze the charge pipes, because brittle or repaired ones give you a negotiating point.
- Look at the exhaust and the coolant level for white smoke or unexplained loss, which could point to the charge air cooler.
- Inspect around the oil filter housing, valve cover and oil pan for fresh oil or wet gaskets.
- On a DCT car, drive it from cold for clunky shifts, then ask when the fluid was last changed.
- Look for signs of tuning or track use, which Squeezed ties to much higher crank hub failure rates, and book a pre-purchase inspection with a BMW specialist.
- Ask for proof that the driveshaft and rear subframe recall work was done.
- Check which roof the car has, since a glass moonroof replaced the carbon one.
F80 M3 running costs
Crank hub work is the bill to know. CarScout puts a preventive capture plate at $800 to $1,500 installed and a fix after a slip at $1,800 to $3,600. BimmerBench says owners paid $2,250 to $3,900 at independent shops for the upgrade.
Squeezed prices a charge air cooler replacement at $2,000 to $3,500. On the DCT side, CarScout lists mechatronic repair at $2,000 to $4,000 and a full rebuild at $3,500 to $7,000, with fluid changes every 30,000 miles or two years. It also says a manual's clutch and dual-mass flywheel typically cost $1,500 to $2,500 somewhere past 60,000 miles.
Squeezed puts carbon ceramic rotors at roughly $8,000 to $10,000 for a set of four. Our M3 price guide shows what the cars themselves cost.
F80 M3 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for 2015 to 2018 M3 models. 16V653 covers 2015 to 2017 sedans and concerns rear subframe bolts that may have been reused during differential servicing. 18V713 covers 2016 to 2017 and concerns a driveshaft-to-flange connection that may fail, causing a loss of propulsion. 15V782 covers 2015 to 2016 cars built in a set window in 2015 and relates to the driveshaft. A fourth, 24V288, is an air bag recall covering 2015 cars among other BMWs.
A campaign covers certain cars, not every car of a model year, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 21 complaints with NHTSA, most about the fuel or propulsion system (8) and the engine (6). Those are reports, not proven faults. One mentions a fire, and none mention crashes, injuries or deaths.
NHTSA recalls for the F80 M3
Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2018 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24V288000 | Apr 24, 2024 | 2015 | Air bags | An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. |
| 18V713000 | Oct 11, 2018 | 2016 to 2017 | Power train | A loss of vehicle propulsion can increase the risk of a crash. |
| 16V653000 | Sep 9, 2016 | 2015 to 2017 | Structure | Loose rear sub-frame bolts may adversely affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 15V782000 | Nov 23, 2015 | 2015 to 2016 | Power train | If the slip-joint fails, there would be a loss of power to the rear axle and therefore the vehicle would stop moving, increasing the risk of a crash. |
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the F80 M3
Owners filed 21 complaints with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2018 model years (1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
Buy a 2018 or a late-build 2017 Competition. A manual is the rarer choice, and the CS suits you if you want the extra power and exclusivity. A 2015 or 2016 sedan can still make sense, but only with the hub work documented.
Skip anything tuned or tracked unless the paperwork is complete. Insist on a clean scan with no correlation faults, intact charge pipes and confirmation that the driveshaft recall work was done.

F80 M3: common questions
What is the best F80 M3 to buy?
A 2018 M3 is the pick, according to CarScout, since it has the revised crank hub, LED headlights and the CS on offer. A late-build 2017 Competition has the same hub and the 444 hp chassis. The manual is the rarer gearbox.
What goes wrong with the F80 M3?
The S55 crank hub is the main one, since it can slip and upset engine timing. Plastic charge pipes crack, the charge air cooler can leak coolant, and gaskets seep oil on higher-mileage cars. Intake carbon buildup and DCT mechatronic failures are also reported.
Is the F80 M3 reliable?
Yes, with one known exception, the crank hub. PistonHeads reports the S55 as reliable apart from that weakness. Failure estimates range widely between sources, and cars built from the March 2017 update carry the revised part.
How much does it cost to run an F80 M3?
The big bills are crank hub work at $800 to $1,500 preventive or $1,800 to $3,600 after a slip, per CarScout. Squeezed prices a charge air cooler at $2,000 to $3,500, and CarScout lists DCT mechatronic repair at $2,000 to $4,000. Manual clutch and flywheel work runs $1,500 to $2,500.
How much is a used F80 M3?
Asking prices for the 229 cars we track for sale right now run from $24,995 to $100,174, with a median of $48,791. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the F80 M3 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2015 to 2018 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
