BMW M3 (G80) buying guide

The G80 M3 has a well-regarded engine, but two main bearing delivery stops mean the build date and service history of any car come before the test drive.

The G80 M3 as a used buy

BMW has twice stopped deliveries of G80 M3s over crankshaft main bearing shells, so the build date of a used one matters before anything else. The G80 is the current M3, sold in the US only as a four-door sedan from 2021, and the Touring has never been offered here. Every car uses the S58 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six.

The first stop covers some 2022 cars, and a second, in 2026, covers sedans built in a set window. Neither is a numbered NHTSA recall, so a plain recall search will not show them. CarScout and BimmerBench both tell buyers to check a car against these campaigns.

Against the F80 it replaces, the G80 is stiffer, more composed and easier to live with every day. It is also heavier, and Squeezed agrees with CarScout that this costs some of the F80's razor-edge feel. If that matters more to you, read our F80 M3 guide.

G80 M3 years and versions

The base M3 makes 473 hp and comes with a 6-speed manual. The Competition makes 503 hp and uses an 8-speed automatic. That gearbox is a ZF torque-converter unit, not the dual-clutch of the F80. A manual G80 weighs roughly 3,924 lbs against 3,515 lbs for a comparable F80, per BMW's figures.

The Competition xDrive, with rear-biased all-wheel drive, was new for 2022. For 2023 the cars got the curved dual display and iDrive 8. The M3 CS Sedan came in for 2024, xDrive only, with 543 hp and carbon fiber panels on the hood, roof, trunk lid, front splitter and mirror caps, which saves roughly 75 lbs against a standard Competition xDrive. It is listed as dropped for 2025. The 2025 LCI refresh brought new headlights and lifted the xDrive Competition from 503 to 523 hp, while the rear-drive Competition and the base car kept their output.

Squeezed describes the Competition xDrive as the daily-driver pick and the base manual as the enthusiast choice. CarScout says xDrive brings all-weather usability and slightly quicker acceleration, at a cost of about 200 lbs and some rear-drive balance. VINSCRIBE finds the AWD cars incredibly fast but less engaging than rear-drive. If you drive year-round in bad weather, the extra 200 lbs buys traction; if you want the rear-drive balance, the Competition without xDrive or the base manual keeps it.

CarScout singles out the 2025 model year for having the newest styling and the extra power. Skip the optional carbon bucket seats unless you rarely go far: CarMaxx Ink and Squeezed both call them uncomfortable on long drives and hard to get into, and the standard M Sport seats are more practical. Common G80 M3 problems

The bottom end of the engine is the main worry. BimmerBench and CarScout report no chronic engine fault beyond it, though long-term high-mileage data is limited.

Main bearing shells

BMW stopped delivering 2022 M3s built from July 13 to September 23, 2021, after finding a flaw in how the crankshaft main bearings were made. The bearing's sliding layer can peel and damage the engine, and dealers inspect the shells and replace them free. A second delivery stop, effective February 6, 2026, covers sedans built from October 16, 2025 to January 20, 2026.

Intake valve carbon

Because the S58 is direct-injected, carbon builds up on the intake valves, and BimmerBench and CarScout both put it at roughly 40,000 to 60,000 miles. Symptoms are an uneven idle and a dead patch in throttle response. Independent shops charge $1,200 to $1,600 for walnut blasting, per CarScout, with dealers 30 to 50 percent higher.

High-pressure fuel pump

Kestrel relays owner reports of pump failures on early cars, showing as hesitation and limp mode. Out of warranty, it puts the repair at $1,200 to $2,000.

iDrive 8 glitches

The system on 2021-2022 cars can freeze or lose connectivity, mostly cured by over-the-air updates. Wireless CarPlay can also drop out intermittently.

Drive belt idler bracket

A service campaign covers the drive belt idler pulley bracket on S58 engines from 2024-2025. Ask whether the work has been done.

Cold brake squeal

Light pedal pressure on cold or damp brakes makes the M compound pads squeal. BMW considers it normal, according to CarScout, so it is no sign of a fault.

What to check on a used G80 M3

Start with the build date and campaign history, then move to the car itself.

  • Check the VIN for open recalls and service campaigns, including the bearing shell delivery stop.
  • Confirm that a 2026 car was not built between October 2025 and January 2026.
  • Ask for the dealer work order showing the bearing shells were inspected or replaced on any 2022 car built in the affected window.
  • Start the car from cold and listen for rough running, then watch for a flat spot in throttle response that points to intake carbon.
  • Plug in a BMW-capable scan tool and read any stored fault codes.
  • Ask about tunes, downpipes and intakes, which can complicate warranty claims and add wear.
  • Inspect panel alignment and finish on a CS, because poorly refinished carbon panels suggest a past accident.
  • Request a written rotor condition report on carbon ceramic brakes and look for cracks, since wear is hard to judge by eye.
  • Test the infotainment and wireless CarPlay on a 2021-2022 car for freezing or dropped connections.
  • Book a pre-purchase inspection with a BMW specialist.

G80 M3 running costs

BimmerBench puts an M differential fluid service at $176 to $265 at independent shops and $260 to $450 at dealers. Walnut blasting and a fuel pump are covered above.

Tires wear quickly. The factory Michelin Pilot Sport 4S lasts from about 8,000 miles under a hard driver to around 20,000 under a gentle one, according to CarScout. On a manual, the same source expects the clutch to outlast 50,000 miles in normal use, with hard driving calling for one at 40,000 to 50,000.

Carbon ceramic brakes are the item to price before you buy: CarScout reports that replacing the whole set costs $16,000 to $20,000, while iron brakes run roughly $600 to $1,200 for each axle.

G80 M3 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for the 2021 to 2027 model years. Three are on 2021 cars: a passenger seat belt retractor (21V554), a seat belt bolt not tightened to specification (21V298), and a weld in the integrated brake system that could cause loss of ABS (21V062). The fourth, on 2023 cars (23V118), concerns a replacement body domain controller with incorrect programming that may stop the doors auto-locking. Several of these campaigns cover other BMW models too, and a campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected. Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, and remember the bearing stops will not appear there.

Owners have filed 8 complaints with NHTSA, including 2 crashes and no fires, injuries or deaths. They are spread thinly, with two each for the power train and unknown or other components. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy the Competition xDrive for daily driving and the base manual if you want the enthusiast choice. AutoTrader calls the G80 one of the more reliable modern M cars, and CarScout points to the 2025 model year for its newest styling and power.

Walk away from any 2022 car built in the affected window unless the seller can produce the dealer record of the shell inspection, and from any 2026 car built between October 2025 and January 2026. Have a BMW specialist inspect the car, and get a written rotor report if it has carbon ceramic brakes. Our G80 listings and price guide show what is on the market.

G80 M3: common questions

What is the best G80 M3 to buy?

Buy the Competition xDrive for daily driving or the base manual as the enthusiast choice. Squeezed names those two roles, and CarScout favors the 2025 model year for its styling and power. Skip cars in the bearing delivery-stop build windows unless the inspection is documented.

What goes wrong with the G80 M3?

The main concern is the crankshaft main bearing shells on some 2022 and late 2025 to early 2026 builds. Other reports include intake valve carbon from roughly 40,000 to 60,000 miles, fuel pump failures on early cars and iDrive 8 glitches on 2021-2022 cars.

Is the G80 M3 reliable?

Mostly, according to the sources. AutoTrader calls the G80 one of the more reliable modern M cars, and no chronic engine fault is reported, though high-mileage data is limited. The two bearing shell delivery stops are the exception to check for.

How much does it cost to run a G80 M3?

Tires, brakes and the odd repair make up most of the bill. CarScout says Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires last from about 8,000 to around 20,000 miles, and iron brakes run roughly $600 to $1,200 per axle. Carbon ceramics cost $16,000 to $20,000 per set.

How much is a used G80 M3?

Asking prices for the 517 cars we track for sale right now run from $50,395 to $160,949, with a median of $85,384. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the G80 M3 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2021 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
