BMW M5 (F10) buying guide

The first turbocharged M5 is a fast used sedan whose best examples have full service records, updated software and no open oil pump recall.

The F10 M5 as a used buy

Buy an F10 M5 on its service history. The oil system of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8 is what a used buyer has to get right, and Bimmer Garage says the engine's fine oilways will not tolerate dirty or thick oil. A complete record counts for more than a low odometer reading.

The F10 is the fifth-generation M5 and the first with turbochargers. It reached showrooms in 2011 as a 2012 model and ran through 2016, making 560 hp and 502 lb-ft. Most cars have the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch gearbox. A six-speed manual was offered in the U.S., but Exotic Car Hacks and AutoTrader.ca both expect a used one to be hard to track down.

PistonHeads rates the F10 as more reliable than the E60 M5 (see our E60 M5 guide), though it adds that careful engine maintenance is essential. AutoTrader.ca calls a certified pre-owned car with full records the smartest choice. F10 M5 years and versions

The dividing line is the mid-cycle update (LCI), announced in May 2013 for 2014 model year cars. Outside, it brought kidney grilles with a double-spoke design, adaptive xenon headlights and LED tail-lights on every car. Inside, there is a new steering wheel and an iDrive 4.2 controller with a touchpad.

CarWizz reports that owners favor 2014-2016 LCI cars over 2012-2013 cars, citing better options and improved reliability. PistonHeads hears a different view: many contented owners of pre-2014 cars with no problems say paying extra for an LCI car is a waste of money. If you look at an early car, its software history matters more than the badge.

The Competition Package arrived for 2014 and lifted power to 575 hp, with stiffer suspension, 20-inch wheels and a sports exhaust. PistonHeads adds that it also loudened the exhaust, recalibrated the transmission and steering, and dropped the car by 10mm. The 30 Jahre M5 was limited to 300 units with 600 hp and 516 lb-ft, and the 2016 Pure Metal Edition was limited to 20 units in the U.S., also with 600 hp.

On gearboxes, CarWizz recommends the six-speed manual for drivers who want involvement and calls the DCT the faster, more consistent choice. Carbon ceramic brakes with gold calipers were optional, and Bimmer Garage says they last longer on the road but cost a great deal to replace. Drive notes that lane-keeping and night-vision systems were extra-cost options, so check what a given car actually has.

Common F10 M5 problems

VANOS oil leaks

A rattle from the front of the engine on a cold start points to the VANOS valve-timing system leaking oil. Drive adds that a check-engine light and limp-home mode can follow, sometimes from false alarms by the camshaft-angle sensor, and a software re-flash can sometimes cure it.

Software-related faults

Australian Car.Reviews points to service bulletin SI B12 26 14, which covers 2012-14 cars showing Service Engine Soon, Drivetrain Malfunction and VANOS faults while the engine is mechanically sound. The cause is software settings that are not ideal.

Oil pump driveshaft

Recalled: 2013 cars built July 19 to September 11, 2012 could have the oil pump driveshaft separate from its rotor. Oil pressure could drop suddenly, and the engine could fail completely.

Rod bearings

Rod bearing failures like those on the E90 M3 have occurred, most typically on 2012-13 cars, and PistonHeads describes them as rare.

Fuel system and ignition

Coil packs and spark plugs go wrong, and the high-pressure fuel pump can fail, with long starting as the symptom. On early production cars, AutoTrader.ca says a flawed fuel pressure sensor or pump can trigger a Drivetrain error with a maximum-power-not-available message.

Wastegate linkage corrosion

Corrosion of the turbo wastegate actuator linkage pin can bring a rattle and a loss of power.

Turbo coolant pipes

Each of the four coolant pipes to the turbos can weep a little. A repair kit sorts it out easily, says PistonHeads.

Rear springs and brakes

A noisy rear end can mean the rear coil springs need replacing, and AutoTrader.ca blames a bad batch of factory springs on earlier models. Owners who track the car commonly report brake fade.

What to check on a used F10 M5

  • Insist on a full service history, because the V8's fine oilways will not tolerate dirty or thick oil.
  • Look around the VANOS actuators for oil leaks and listen for a rattle at the front of the engine on a cold start.
  • Check that every engine and transmission software update has been applied, and ask for the dealer paperwork.
  • Ask whether the injectors were replaced under BMW's 120,000-mile injector warranty.
  • Check the suspension rubber bushings for wear, since this heavy car works them hard.
  • Listen for a noisy rear end, which can point to tired rear coil springs.
  • Ask a dealer to run the VIN to see whether a 2013 car qualifies for the oil pump recall, and confirm every recall has been done.
  • Check which options the car has, including lane-keeping, night vision and carbon ceramic brakes.
  • Book a pre-purchase inspection that includes a full diagnostic scan and a check for fluid leaks.

F10 M5 running costs

BMW suggests a service every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Rear differential fluid is on its own schedule, with a limit of 40,000 miles or 48 months. evo notes that the S63 has timing chains and no belts, and that the third service is the big one, when transmission fluid and plugs are done. Exotic Car Hacks puts an oil change at $300 to $350 from a dealer, against $200 to $250 from an independent shop.

evo reports a full set of genuine brakes at over £1300 (a UK figure) and new tires at hundreds of pounds per corner, though some owners report 20,000-plus miles from rear tires. Bimmer Garage warns that replacing carbon ceramic brakes is very expensive. Our BMW M5 price guide shows what cars are listed for.

F10 M5 recalls and complaints

NHTSA's records show 5 recall campaigns for the 2012 to 2016 M5. Two matter most. One is the engine oil pump campaign for 2013 cars built July 19 to September 11, 2012, where the pump's drive shaft and rotor tolerance was out of specification. The other is a power train campaign for 2015 M5 sedans built September 4 to December 4, 2014, over a driveshaft that may have been poorly welded and could fracture.

The remaining three cover rear reflex reflectors on 2013 to 2014 cars, a bent child-seat anchor on certain 2016 cars and an air bag issue. Build dates set the limits of the two serious campaigns, so check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 16 complaints, 9 of them about the engine and 3 about steering. One report involved a fire; none involved crashes, injuries or deaths. They are reports, not proven faults.

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2012 to 2016 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Campaign Reported Model years Component What can happen
16V914000 Dec 20, 2016 2016 Air bags If the air bag inflator initiator fails to ignite, the seat-mounted air bag will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
16V540000 Jul 19, 2016 2015 Power train Due to the improper weld, the driveshaft may fracture and fail, causing loss of drive to the rear wheels and a loss of propulsion. Additionally, if the car is turned off and exited without the parking brake applied, the car may roll. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
15V718000 Oct 30, 2015 2016 Child seat If the child seat is not properly attached to the lower anchors, it can increase the child's risk of injury in the event of a crash.
15V188000 Mar 31, 2015 2013 to 2014 Exterior lighting The vehicle may be less visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.
12V475000 Sep 28, 2012 2013 Engine and engine cooling Separation of the pump's driveshaft from the rotor could lead to a sudden loss of oil pressure causing the possibility of complete engine failure, resulting in an engine stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Our verdict

Buy a 2014-2016 car with full records, preferably certified pre-owned, the route AutoTrader.ca calls the smartest. CarWizz owners favor the LCI cars for better options and improved reliability, and that settles it unless a 2012 or 2013 car comes with updated software and a clean oil history. The Competition Package adds power and sharper handling if you want it. Compare cars in our used M5 listings.

Skip a 2013 car that cannot be shown clear of the oil pump recall. Whatever the year, ask for the software update history and whether the injectors were replaced under BMW's 120,000-mile warranty, and have the VANOS area checked for leaks on a cold start.

F10 M5: common questions

What is the best F10 M5 to buy?

A 2014-2016 LCI car with full service records is the best buy, ideally certified pre-owned. CarWizz reports owners favor these cars for better options and reliability, and the 2014 Competition Package adds 575 hp. A six-speed manual suits involvement but is hard to find.

What goes wrong with the F10 M5?

The main issues are VANOS oil leaks, software-related fault messages, fuel pump and ignition problems and wastegate linkage corrosion. Early 2013 cars had an oil pump driveshaft recall, and rod bearing failures are described as rare. Turbo coolant pipes can seep, and a repair kit fixes them.

Is the F10 M5 reliable?

Mostly yes, if it has been maintained carefully. PistonHeads rates it more reliable than the E60 M5, and evo says significant failures are not common. Owners have filed 16 complaints with NHTSA, 9 about the engine.

How much does it cost to run an F10 M5?

Budget for expensive upkeep. BMW suggests a service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, and an oil change runs $200 to $250 at an independent shop or $300 to $350 at a dealer. evo says a full set of genuine brakes tops £1300, and carbon ceramics cost far more to replace.

How much is a used F10 M5?

Asking prices for the 72 cars we track for sale right now run from $16,000 to $61,065, with a median of $28,273. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the F10 M5 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns filed for the 2012 to 2016 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
