Ferrari 599 (GTB Fiorano and GTO) buying guide
The 599 is a front-engined V12 Ferrari with a few clear weak spots: the F1 clutch, the magnetic dampers and the paperwork on rare manuals and HGTE cars.
The 599 as a used buy
The Ferrari 599 rewards a buyer who checks the clutch and the service history before anything else. The F1 gearbox is the usual weak point, and a car driven hard or neglected can cost thousands to put right. Fully Sorted lists the cars as 2007 to 2012, though other sources give different ranges and the EPA lists the GTB through the 2011 model year.
The 599 GTB Fiorano replaced the 575M Maranello. It has an aluminum chassis, a first for a Ferrari GT car, and a 6.0-liter V12 derived from the Enzo's. The US car makes 612 hp and 448 lb-ft and revs to 8,400 rpm. It was also the first Ferrari with magnetorheological adaptive dampers. MotorWeek recorded 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed over 205 mph.
It suits someone who wants a big V12 grand tourer and will budget for upkeep. Giallo Modena calls it a high-maintenance car that punishes the unprepared. You can browse used 599s for sale while you read.
599 years and versions
The standard car is the GTB Fiorano. Nearly every buyer ordered the F1 SuperFast automated manual, which shifts in 100 milliseconds. The alternative is a gated six-speed manual, the rarest configuration. Most sources count 30 built and 20 for the US, while one puts the world figure nearer 40. Aftermarket manual conversions exist, so treat a manual without factory paperwork as a conversion until proven otherwise. Our GTB Fiorano market page shows what is listed.
The HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) package became optional in 2009 and leaves the engine and gearbox alone. The Ferrari Owners Club UK says it stiffens the suspension by 17% at the front and 15% at the rear, lowers the car by 10mm and cuts Fiorano lap times by 0.6 seconds. It also brings revised Pirelli P Zero tires, wider wheels and a thicker rear anti-roll bar. The F1 gearbox shifts in 85 milliseconds in Race mode. Targa and the owners club both describe it as a rarer car that serious drivers prefer. HGTE cars are sold by build sheet rather than badge, so ask to see the build sheet.
Targa says cars from 2009 to 2011 carry the factory's later software updates, and buyers could specify HGTE on them. If you want the newer cars, the 599 market page tracks them.
The 599 GTO of 2011 has 660 hp at 8,250 rpm and 457 lb-ft, with production held to 599 cars. It drew on the 599XX programme. The SA Aperta is the open version, limited to 80 cars, which shares the GTO's engine and gearbox and was unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. See the GTO market page or GTO listings.

Common 599 problems
The Ferrari Owners Club UK says there are few inherent issues, but the sources point to several areas that cost money.
F1 clutch wear
Clutch wear is a concern on the F1 gearbox, especially on cars driven hard. Signs are jerky low-speed behavior and worn hydraulic actuators. A new clutch costs £3000-£5000, according to the Ferrari Owners Club UK.
Magnetic damper failure
The magnetorheological dampers can leak or wear and are expensive to replace. New ones are around £1500 each, the owners club says, and can be bought only in pairs.
Motor mount failure
Fully Sorted says the motor mounts tend to fail around 30,000 miles because of engine heat.
Oil overfilling
KickTyres says the most common problem specialists see is overfilled dry-sump oil, from checking the level with the engine cold. The result is smoke and fouled plugs.
Valve guides and seals
Giallo Modena reports premature valve guide wear on early cars. Engine seals can also develop oil leaks with age.
Steering and suspension joints
Track rod ends and ball joints are the likeliest tired parts. The repairs are not especially costly, with ball joints at £500 per corner.
Interior and body faults
Sticky console buttons, switchgear coating and shrinking leather are common interior faults. The aluminum bodyshell can corrode, and the Perspex rear quarterlights can craze.
What to check on a used 599
Spend the money on a specialist inspection, and bring this list to it.
- Ask for a clutch life readout, since anything below 50% could mean an expensive replacement is close.
- Feel for jerkiness as the car sets off, which suggests clutch wear that a dealer can confirm with SD3 diagnostics.
- Ask for invoices showing the gearbox oil was changed every two years or 37,000 miles.
- Insist on a full, regular service history before you consider the car.
- Check the carbon-ceramic brake discs for wear and listen and feel for vibration under braking.
- Look for paint bubbling where the composite flying buttresses meet the rear wings.
- Inspect the door jamb by the sill plate for corrosion.
- Look at the Perspex rear quarterlights for crazing.
- Check whether the car has an aftermarket exhaust, as some are very noisy.
- Press every console button and check the switchgear coating for stickiness.
- Confirm any HGTE package or manual gearbox against the build sheet and factory paperwork.
599 running costs
Servicing is not cheap. Giallo Modena puts annual servicing at a Ferrari specialist at €2,000 to €3,000, and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires at €1,500 or more. For the clutch, the Ferrari Owners Club UK quotes £3000 to £5000.
Fully Sorted says replacing the console buttons at a dealer costs nearly $2,000, and replacing both exhaust manifolds adds $3,800. Targa puts a full four-corner OEM carbon-ceramic brake replacement at €15,000 to €25,000. Replacement Perspex quarterlights run around £500 per side plus fitting, per the owners club. See our price guide for what cars sell at.
599 recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds no recall campaigns for the 599 for 2007 to 2012, and no owner complaints. You should still run a car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

Our verdict
Find a later car, 2009 to 2011, with documented history, and if you can, an HGTE car confirmed by its build sheet. The Ferrari Owners Club UK says the V12 and gearbox are proving very strong, and rates the build quality as superb. The GTO is the faster, rarer choice, and the GTB Fiorano price guide helps you compare.
Skip any car without a full service history, and treat an undocumented manual as a conversion. Insist on a clutch readout and a specialist inspection before you pay.

599: common questions
What is the best 599 to buy?
A 2009 to 2011 GTB Fiorano with the HGTE package, confirmed by its build sheet, is the one to look for if you want the sharper handling. Targa says later cars carry accumulated software revisions. The 599 GTO is the faster, limited-production alternative.
What goes wrong with the 599?
The F1 clutch is the main worry, and the magnetic dampers can leak or wear. Fully Sorted says motor mounts tend to fail around 30,000 miles. Overfilled dry-sump oil, sticky console buttons and tired track rod ends and ball joints also turn up.
Is the 599 reliable?
Mostly, with caveats. The Ferrari Owners Club UK says the V12 and gearbox are proving very strong, but Giallo Modena calls the 599 high-maintenance and punishing for the unprepared. A full service history matters more than the badge.
How much does it cost to run a 599?
Giallo Modena puts annual servicing at €2,000 to €3,000 at a Ferrari specialist. A new clutch costs £3000 to £5000 per the Ferrari Owners Club UK, and a full carbon-ceramic brake replacement is €15,000 to €25,000 per Targa.
How much is a used 599?
Asking prices for the 24 cars we track for sale right now run from $246,581 to $2,109,122, with a median of $393,205. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the 599 been recalled?
NHTSA lists no recall campaigns from the carmaker for the 2007 to 2012 model years as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy.
