Ferrari GTC4Lusso (and GTC4Lusso T) buying guide

The GTC4Lusso is a V12 four-seat Ferrari whose reported weak points sit in the four-wheel-drive hardware, the gearbox and the electronics, so service history counts for more than mileage.

The GTC4Lusso as a used buy

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso is the V12 shooting-brake that replaced the FF, built from 2016 to 2020, and on any four-wheel-drive car the first job is to ask for the PTU's service and rebuild history. The power transfer unit has a record of leaking hydraulic oil into the gearbox, and a rebuild is not cheap. Settle that before you fall for the glass roof.

It is a 2+2 with a 6,262cc naturally aspirated V12 making 681 hp, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and four-wheel steering. Car Collector International and Exotic Car Trader both call it the last naturally aspirated V12 four-seat Ferrari. Production was around 2,500 cars, and Parkers rates it a grand tourer with few rivals as capable.

It fits a buyer who wants a V12 Ferrari with rear seats and is prepared to pay specialist rates when the four-wheel-drive system or gearbox needs work. Our used GTC4Lusso listings show what is for sale now, and the price guide shows how asking prices run by model year. GTC4Lusso years and versions

There are two cars. The GTC4Lusso has the V12 and all-wheel drive. The GTC4Lusso T has a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 making 602 hp, and drives the rear wheels only. Both use the same 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and both have carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes as standard.

The T was not officially imported to the United States, so any you find here arrived another way. Ask how it came to be here and what the paperwork says; the GTC4Lusso T market page lists what is for sale. The V12 cars are on the GTC4Lusso market page.

PistonHeads describes the V8 as a less shouty drive with lower fuel use, while the V12 sounds far more dramatic and tops 200mph comfortably. Octane Files points out the T is simpler to own, since it has no four-wheel drive or power transfer unit, which takes the most-discussed fault off the table. The V12 also has four-wheel steering, which the T lacks. PistonHeads expects V12s to keep costing a lot more than V8s.

Options matter as much as mileage, says Octane Files: the full-length glass roof, passenger display, carbon packs and Apple CarPlay divide cars. Car Collector International adds that Tailor Made interiors help resale, while swapped-in non-original trim is a discount item.

Common GTC4Lusso problems

These are the faults the sources and NHTSA's records raise, starting with the four-wheel-drive system.

PTU oil leaks

The power transfer unit in the four-wheel-drive system has a reputation for failing, because poor sealing lets hydraulic oil leak into the gearbox. The warning is a '4WD Failure' message with the Manettino stuck in Wet. Kick Tyres and PistonHeads say it is less common than on the FF but still happens.

Gearbox hesitation

The dual-clutch gearbox can hesitate when you shuffle between reverse and forward while parking. The blame goes to seals or sensors, according to PistonHeads, Octane Files and Kick Tyres alike.

Fuel vapor separators

Cars built between October 2017 and October 2018 were recalled to replace defective fuel vapor separators. NHTSA's record says the part may crack and let fuel leak.

Manettino and electronics

Manettino failures have been reported, often clearing overnight. Octane Files lists screens freezing on software bugs, passenger windows dropping after locking and door-release cables breaking. A Parkers reviewer's car had sat-nav failure and a suspected low-voltage fault that disabled the 4WD, Manettino and rear steering.

Battery failures

PistonHeads reports batteries failing even on cars driven every day. That is a separate report from the Parkers reviewer's car, where the low-voltage fault was only suspected, not confirmed.

Door lock tension

A recall covers door lock mechanism tension that can leave a door unopenable from the outside handle. The recall lists 2017-2019 GTC4Lusso and 2018-2019 GTC4Lusso T cars.

What to check on a used GTC4Lusso

Spend your viewing time on the four-wheel-drive system, the gearbox and the electrics.

  • Ask for evidence of a PTU rebuild on any V12, with invoices showing who did the work.
  • Watch for a '4WD Failure' warning, or a Manettino stuck in Wet, on the test drive.
  • Park the car and shuffle between reverse and first several times, feeling for gearbox hesitation.
  • Confirm the fuel vapor separator and brake fluid cap recalls with a Ferrari dealer, not on the seller's word.
  • Demand Ferrari dealer or approved body-shop paperwork for any aluminum body repair.
  • Verify the rear steering works on the V12.
  • Look for aftermarket ECU, catalyst or exhaust changes, which Car Collector International says hurt resale.
  • Test the touchscreen and passenger display for pixel or touch faults, then run every window and door release.
  • Ask whether the battery has been replaced, and when.

GTC4Lusso running costs

Octane Files and PistonHeads put a PTU rebuild by a UK specialist at £7,950, a UK figure. PistonHeads also cites £7k to drop, split and rebuild the dual-clutch gearbox for sensor failures, though that was on an FF.

Ferrari gave seven years of free servicing, annual or every 12.5k miles, according to PistonHeads, Parkers and Kelley Blue Book. Check how much of that remains on the car you are viewing. Parkers says the 20-inch tires are expensive to replace. PistonHeads notes the standard UK warranty ran four years, and that extended warranties are expensive.

GTC4Lusso recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds four recall campaigns for 2017 to 2020 cars. They cover cracking fuel vapor separators that can leak fuel (2018 to 2019), door lock tension that can stop a door opening from outside (2017 to 2019), the Takata airbag inflators (2017 to 2018) and a hydraulic brake component campaign (2018 to 2020). A campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, both about air bags. These are reports, not proven faults, and none involve crashes, fires, injuries or deaths.

Owner complaints to NHTSA about the GTC4Lusso

Owners filed 2 complaints with NHTSA for the 2017 to 2020 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict

Buy the V12 if you want the car Ferrari built it to be: the last naturally aspirated four-seat V12, with few rivals as capable. Insist on proof of a PTU rebuild or a documented four-wheel-drive history, closed recalls and original trim.

The T avoids the PTU, but it was not officially sold here, so the import paperwork becomes your risk. Whichever you pick, ask for approved-shop paperwork on any body repair, and see our other Ferrari listings if you want to compare.
