Ferrari Roma buying guide

The Roma is a 612 hp twin-turbo V8 GT with no model year that sources tell you to avoid, so the car's own battery record and recall paperwork matter most.

The Roma as a used buy

Before you shortlist a used Ferrari Roma, learn the history of its 12V battery and whether the early brake recall was done. Ferrari showed this front mid-engined 2+2 grand tourer in November 2019, and the model year range starts at 2021.

A 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 makes 612 hp and 561 lb-ft, sent through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. exoticcarhacks.com quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed above 199 mph. Inside are a 16-inch digital cluster and an 8.4-inch center screen, plus an optional passenger display.

On mileage, PistonHeads says UK used cars have covered under 25,000 miles, most under 10,000, and that they have not been problem-free. That is a UK observation, but it tells you to judge a Roma by its records. Start with used Roma listings and read each car's service file.

Roma years and versions

The coupe came first. The Roma Spider arrived in March 2023 with a fabric roof, the first front-engined Ferrari with a soft top since the 365 GTS/4. carscounsel.com says it gets minor structural reinforcement and keeps the coupe's powertrain. According to exoticcarhacks.com, the roof can be raised or lowered in 13.5 seconds at up to 37 mph.

Ferrari announced the coupe's phase-out in Q3 2024, leaving the Spider as the only variant sold. The Amalfi was unveiled in July 2025 as the successor.

Carscounsel finds no model year that warrants a strict avoid verdict. It says 2023 and 2024 cars are the newest but lack long-term reliability data, and that early cars from 2020 to 2022 need confirmation that a dealer did the brake recall. automonitor.io suggests the 2021 coupe as the best-value year, citing rewritten infotainment software and smoother low-speed calibration. Another page found no significant updates for 2021 and 2022, so that pick rests on one source.

The 2021 and 2022 cars are the ones in the brake recall, and the Spider has its own driveshaft recall (see below). Our Roma price guide shows how the years compare in the market, and the Roma market page lists every car for sale.

Common Roma problems

The reported faults are mostly electrical or software, plus one serious recall on early cars.

Brake fluid cap recall

On 2021 to 2022 cars, the reservoir cap for the brake fluid may fail to vent. That can build a vacuum and leak fluid, risking partial or total loss of braking (recall 22V536000). Ferrari's remedy was a redesigned cap plus a software update.

12V battery drain

PistonHeads says many Roma problems have been electrical, most often because batteries were not in prime condition. CarChecker reports a flat 12V battery within three to five days of the car sitting, with warning lights, resets and ECU fault codes.

Engine control warnings

Some drivers have had Engine Control System Failure warnings. They may be linked to voltage sensitivity and low battery charge.

Slow infotainment

The system can be slow, freeze or have Bluetooth problems, and the touch interface is criticized as slow and cumbersome. Automonitor.io says the 2021 coupe got rewritten software.

Low-speed gearbox shudder

Some early owners reported the transmission shuddering at very low speeds. Only one source mentions it, so test for it rather than assume it.

Door hydraulic leaks

The soft-close door hydraulics can develop slow leaks, according to automonitor.io.

Twitchy steering

The steering is described as overly sensitive or twitchy. That is a trait to try on the road, not a fault.

What to check on a used Roma

Start with paperwork and the battery, then spend time at low speed.

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that every recall was done, since an authorized dealer does the work free of charge.
  • Confirm that the 7-year Complimentary Maintenance Program is still running and can pass to you, then read the dealer service history.
  • Measure battery voltage at rest, which should be at least 12.4V, ask whether a tender was used and make sure the factory charger comes with the car.
  • On a slow drive, pay attention to clutch shudder, hesitation or jerky take-up in first and second gears.
  • Ask for a current Ferrari diagnostic report showing clutch wear and any transmission control unit fault history.
  • Look over the carbon-ceramic brakes, and on a 2020 to 2022 car get written proof that a dealer completed the brake cap recall.
  • If the car has MagneRide, look at the dampers for oil misting or wetness.
  • Read the tire date codes and measure tread depth, since the rears wear faster.
  • Work through the touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, the passenger display and the haptic steering controls.
  • On a Spider, cycle the roof fully and make sure its trim and seals are all there.
  • Book a pre-purchase inspection with a Ferrari specialist.

Roma running costs

The 7-year Complimentary Maintenance Program from Ferrari stays with the car and passes to a new owner, so find out how many years remain. Exoticcarhacks.com recommends minor services annually or every 10,000 miles and major services every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

The same source puts an oil change at $500 to $800 at a Ferrari dealer or $300 to $500 at an independent, and a major service at $3,000 to $7,000 at a dealer or $2,500 to $5,000 independent. Four tires run $1,200 to $4,000, and carbon-ceramic pads and rotors for all four wheels cost $3,000 to $6,500 at a dealer.

Clutch replacement is the large item: $5,000 to $7,500 at a dealer or $4,000 to $6,500 at an independent, per exoticcarhacks.com. CarChecker says a clutch pack can cost up to €10,000. For the wider picture, see how much a Ferrari costs.

Roma recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds 2 recall campaigns for the Roma. Campaign 22V536000 covers 2021 to 2022 Roma models and concerns the hydraulic service brakes, the reservoir cap issue described above. Campaign 24V810000 covers 2024 Roma Spider models, where driveshaft screws may not have been tightened in production and may loosen.

A recall for a model year doesn't mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. As of October 31, 2026, NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years.

Our verdict

Carscounsel sees no year to avoid, and automonitor.io's pick is the 2021 coupe for its software and low-speed calibration. Spider buyers get the roof but should know the 2023 and 2024 cars have little long-term record. Compare cars across the range in used Ferrari listings or see how rivals stack up in Porsche vs Ferrari.

Let the battery history and the diagnostic report decide between two similar cars. On a 2024 Spider, ask for proof that the driveshaft screws were checked.

Roma: common questions

What is the best Roma to buy?

There is no single best Roma, since carscounsel.com finds no year that warrants a strict avoid verdict. Automonitor.io suggests the 2021 coupe for its rewritten infotainment software and smoother low-speed calibration. Pick the Spider if you want a soft top, and favor whichever car has the best history.

What goes wrong with the Roma?

Reported problems are mostly electrical: a 12V battery that can drain within three to five days of sitting, with warning lights and ECU fault codes. Early cars had a brake fluid cap recall, and some owners reported low-speed transmission shudder and slow infotainment. Door hydraulics can also leak slowly.

Is the Roma reliable?

Mostly, yes. Exoticcarhacks.com calls it relatively reliable for a Ferrari, though no car is free of issues, and PistonHeads says used UK cars have not been problem-free. Much of the trouble reported has been electrical and battery related.

How much does it cost to run a Roma?

Exoticcarhacks.com puts a dealer oil change at $500 to $800 and a dealer major service at $3,000 to $7,000, with independents cheaper. Four tires cost $1,200 to $4,000, and a dealer clutch replacement runs $5,000 to $7,500. A 7-year complimentary maintenance program comes with the car.

How much is a used Roma?

Asking prices for the 44 cars we track for sale right now run from $159,990 to $330,694, with a median of $213,843. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the Roma been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2021 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for power train. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
