McLaren 12C (MP4-12C and Spider) buying guide

A 12C is a carbon-tub V8 supercar whose running costs hinge on its hydraulics, gearbox seals and infotainment, so documented history matters more than mileage.

The 12C as a used buy

A used McLaren 12C is a carbon-tub, mid-engine V8 car whose biggest bills come from its chassis hydraulics, gearbox seals and original infotainment. It is rear-wheel drive, with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Early cars appeared in mid-2011 as the MP4-12C, and production ended in mid-2014 to make way for the 650S (see our 650S and 675LT guide). The name changed to plain 12C in 2014.

Opinion on the car splits by condition. Top Gear rates the car as dependable and the engine as bulletproof, while evo says a good one is lovely and one that needs work gets painful fast.

Browse used MP4-12C listings with that in mind: a neglected car and a looked-after one can look identical in photos.

12C years and versions

The 2012 update raised output from 592 hp to 616 hp and cut 0-60 mph from 3.3 seconds to 3.1, according to Exotic Car Hacks. Octane Files adds that McLaren fitted it free on early cars, and that later cars left the factory with 625PS. A 2011 or 2012 car needs proof the update was done.

The Spider arrived in 2012. Its roof folds away for a weight penalty of just 40kg, and since the tub was designed around it, no extra bracing was needed. Evo recommends Spiders: they came after the early production kinks were sorted, they are rarer and they give up no rigidity. It also says Spiders and cars with carbon trim and bucket seats carry a premium. Our Spider price guide shows how the market treats them.

Early cars need not be feared if they have been looked after. Evo says the first 100 were built by MSO and some think them better made. Carbon-ceramic brakes were an option, so check what the car in front of you has; the 2013 McLaren 50 cars (fifty coupes and fifty Spiders) had them as standard.

Octane Files also lists rare special editions: the 2012 12C HS with GT3-inspired aero (ten built), the 2013 Can-Am Edition (planned as 30, stopped at three) and the single X-1 commission. It advises picking a car with the later IRIS system, because the first-generation unit is poor.

Common 12C problems

Hydraulic accumulators

The four accumulators in the chassis control system wear out and are refurbished about every five to six years. Refurbishment runs £2000 per corner, says evo. Worn actuators can also trigger a PCC fault warning, at around £850 for one or £1,800 for all four per Top Gear.

Gearbox seal leaks

A known oil seal fault makes the gearbox leak, and dealers can only replace the whole unit. Top Gear puts the share of cars affected at around five per cent. A replacement for a seal leak is approximately $28,000, according to Exotic Car Hacks.

Clutch input shaft bearing

Wear in the dual-clutch input shaft bearing leads to a fluid leak. Gearbox rebuilds run around £10k, evo says, so a damp gearbox casing is a reason to walk.

Original infotainment

IRIS 1 is troublesome and its updates have stopped. A hardware upgrade to IRIS 2 costs around £3,000 according to Top Gear and SSO Report. Cars from 2011 and 2012 are eligible, per Foreign Automotive, while 2013-2014 cars usually have IRIS 2 already.

Bubbling paint

Moisture trapped in the composite panels makes the paint bubble, and each panel needs a respray. Both Octane Files and evo give ballpark £1200 per panel.

Rear light condensation

The rear lights tend to fog up inside. Top Gear quotes around £500 for the brake light, £550 for the indicator or £700 for both.

Doors, pump and air conditioning

The door handle sensor can fail in wet weather and stop the doors opening, and the gas struts lose pressure after about five to seven years. Evo says water pump leaks are common. A failed air conditioning radiator can leave the system blowing only hot air.

What to check on a used 12C

  • Budget for work whatever the inspection finds: evo reports Thorney Motorsport's inspections average around £10k of work per car.
  • Judge the car on its history, not the odometer, since Octane Files says a car that has sat sees its problems grow in storage.
  • Check the service records for fuel and charcoal filter replacement at the 6th and 12th services.
  • Confirm the 2012 software update was applied, especially on a 2011 or 2012 car.
  • Listen on a cold start for ticking that lingers more than a few seconds; a top-end rebuild is the worry.
  • Listen for a rattle from the downpipe heat shields.
  • Look under the gearbox for fluid, and ask when the accumulators were last refurbished and whether any actuators have been replaced.
  • Press the door handles in wet weather if you can, and check that the struts hold the doors up.
  • Run the air conditioning on full cold, then look around the water pump for leaks or staining.
  • Sight along each panel in raking light for paint bubbles.
  • Confirm which brakes and which infotainment version are fitted.
  • Ask whether the engine has been tuned, since evo warns that standard conrods suffer under increased boost.

12C running costs

Top Gear and Kelley Blue Book give the desired servicing schedule as 12 months or 10,000 miles, and Top Gear puts a service at around £1,500. Those are UK figures.

The large bills are the faults above: £2000 per corner for accumulators (evo), around £10k for a gearbox rebuild (evo) and ballpark £1200 per panel for paint. Octane Files and evo put a top-end rebuild at £8k to £15k, and evo says a full rebuild on a tuned car is £25k+. See our McLaren cost guide for the wider picture.

12C recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns for 2012 to 2014 cars. Three cover air bag inflators: 17V005000 for 2012 cars, 18V007000 for 2013 cars and 19V141000 for 2012-2013 cars, the last also covering other McLaren models. Some are limited to cars sold or registered in particular states. The fourth, 13V541000, covers wiper motor brushes that may jam on 2012-2014 cars built from October 10, 2011 through October 23, 2013 and sold in southern states.

Owners have filed 13 complaints with NHTSA, 9 of them about exterior lighting. These are reports, not proven faults, and none involved crashes, fires or injuries. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

Our verdict

Find a Spider, as evo does: it came after the early production problems and keeps the coupe's rigidity. A 2013 or 2014 car usually has IRIS 2 already, which spares you the upgrade. Browse Spider listings, and compare the market in the Spider price guide only after the car's history checks out. A well-kept early coupe can still be a good car.

Skip any car with a damp gearbox or a tuned engine, and press the seller for the date of the last accumulator refurbishment. A tuned car on standard conrods carries the risk of a rebuild costing £25k+, according to evo.

12C: common questions

What is the best 12C to buy?

A Spider is the best pick, and evo recommends it. It arrived after the early production problems were sorted, is rarer and loses no structural rigidity. A 2013 or 2014 car usually comes with IRIS 2 infotainment already.

What goes wrong with the 12C?

The main issues are worn chassis hydraulics, gearbox oil seal leaks and the troublesome original IRIS infotainment. Paint bubbling on the composite panels, condensation in the rear lights and door sensor faults also turn up. Evo reports water pump leaks as common.

Is the 12C reliable?

Top Gear says yes, calling the car dependable and the engine bulletproof. The weak points are elsewhere: the gearbox has a known oil seal fault, with around five per cent of cars affected according to Top Gear, and the chassis hydraulics need refurbishing about every five to six years.

How much does it cost to run a 12C?

Top Gear puts a service at around £1,500, on a 12 month or 10,000 mile schedule. Accumulator refurbishment is £2000 per corner according to evo, and a gearbox rebuild is around £10k. Those are UK figures.

How much is a used 12C?

Asking prices for the 24 cars we track for sale right now run from $85,445 to $184,999, with a median of $112,144. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the 12C been recalled?

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2012 to 2014 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
