McLaren 720S and 765LT buying guide

A used 720S is a carbon-tub V8 supercar with sound basics, but the suspension accumulators, early-car electronics and a clean specialist service history decide whether it's a good one.

The 720S as a used buy

The McLaren 720S is a car to buy on its paperwork. The mechanicals are rated as fundamentally sound, but the hydraulic suspension, the electronics and the cooling system all punish a car that has been neglected, and deferred work costs more than paying up for a better example.

It replaced the 650S with a Monocage II carbon tub and a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 710 hp, in a car weighing under 3,200 pounds. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard. Our guide covers the 720S coupe and Spider, plus the 765LT and 765LT Spider, from 2018 to 2023.

It suits someone who wants near-hypercar pace with real daily refinement, and who will pay a specialist to look after it. If you plan to leave it in a garage for months, read the battery section of the faults below first. For the wider market, see used McLaren models for sale, and what a McLaren costs if you are still setting a budget.

720S years and versions

The 720S coupe came first, with a 710 hp twin-turbo V8. The Spider followed, sold 2019 to 2023, with a retractable hardtop. evo says no structural rigidity is lost, because it comes from the carbon tub, and Carcollector International says the roof costs little in performance. You can browse used 720S Spiders or used 720S coupes.

Evo recommends the Spider highly. It carries a premium, but it arrived after the coupe's early production problems had been sorted out. The same source finds no discernible difference between model years, though the earliest cars tended to have the most issues. If you buy an early coupe, ask what was fixed and when. Our 720S price guide shows how prices run by year.

Specification matters. Evo says cars with carbon trim, inside or out, and bucket seats carry a premium. Carcollector International puts warranty status, service history and MSO specification at the top of the list, plus evidence that early electronic or hydraulic problems were resolved.

Avoid tuned cars. Evo warns that the standard conrods in the 4.0-litre engine don't stand up well to extra boost. For the 765LT, see our 720S vs 765LT comparison.

Common 720S problems

Specialists agree on a short list of weak points, led by the suspension and the cooling system.

Suspension accumulators

The Proactive Chassis Control accumulators are a wear item. Evo says they need refurbishing around every five to six years, and Foreign Automotive gives a typical life of 50,000 to 80,000 km, with a harsh, choppy ride, cornering lean or limp mode and a warning light as the signs. CarChecker notes McLaren excludes accumulator wear from warranty.

Coolant leaks

Hoses and crossover pipes can crack or leak, showing as a sweet smell, a low-coolant warning or white residue. Running low on coolant can warp the cylinder heads, so treat any sign seriously. Evo also calls water pump leaks common on McLaren V8s.

Infotainment faults

720smanual.com calls the infotainment system the most common failure point on the 720S, and replacement is costly. Foreign Automotive lists frozen screens, a dead reverse camera, Bluetooth dropouts and navigation crashes, mostly cured by a reflash.

Door hinges and struts

The gas struts and dihedral hinges are a common failure point, according to Foreign Automotive. The door drops, pops or sags at its rear edge.

Brake caliper issues

Carbon ceramic calipers can develop sticking pistons, and the pad sensors can give false readings.

Spider roof faults

The roof can stick mid-cycle because of the hydraulic pump, a misaligned microswitch or low fluid. The rear window mechanism can also fail.

Flat battery

If the car sits unplugged for more than two weeks the battery goes flat, and the doors won't open. Use a maintainer.

Turbo inlets and heat shields

CarChecker calls the turbo inlet design a weakness and suggests silicone inlets. Evo says the downpipe heat shields on the V8 cars are prone to failure and expensive to replace. Evo also says dual-clutch gearboxes are known for input shaft bearing wear, which causes a fluid leak.

What to check on a used 720S

Pay for an independent inspection by a McLaren specialist; an owner who refuses one is a red flag, as evo and 720smanual.com both say.

  • Ask for the full service history, with invoices from recognized specialists and proof of any accumulator refurbishment.
  • Listen for engine ticking that lingers more than a few seconds after a cold start, which could point to top-end rebuild work.
  • Check the cooling hoses and crossover pipes for white residue, and smell for sweet coolant.
  • Drive over rough surfaces and listen for thunks from a corner, which could mean tired accumulators, dampers, springs or arms.
  • Watch for a harsh or choppy ride and cornering lean, and look for a limp-mode warning light.
  • Check the paint for bubbling, which can mean alloy corrosion or water trapped between composite panels and paint.
  • Inspect the structural weld seams, panel gaps and crash structures for signs of repair.
  • Run the infotainment through its functions: reverse camera, Bluetooth and navigation.
  • Cycle the doors several times and watch for any drop or sag at the rear edge.
  • On a Spider, cycle the roof fully and operate the rear window.
  • Insist on a full module scan with MDS, and check recall compliance by VIN.
  • Look for signs of a tune, since the standard conrods struggle with extra boost.

720S running costs

Servicing is annual or every 16,000 km, whichever comes first, per McLaren as relayed by Foreign Automotive. Luxury Cars Guide puts major services at up to $8,000 and starts its annual service range at $2,000. Kelley Blue Book lists McLaren's 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and a 10-year anti-perforation warranty.

Evo, using UK prices, puts accumulator refurbishment at £2000 per corner, a top-end rebuild at £8k to £15k, a gearbox rebuild at around £10k and a respray of bubbling paint at about £1200 per panel. Front big brake rotors run $800 or more each, according to 720smanual.com.

720S recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for these model years. Two cover the brakes: a banjo bolt that may lack the holes feeding fluid to the caliper on 2019 to 2020 720S cars, and brake lines routed incorrectly on 2020 to 2023 720S Spider records, which could lock a rear wheel. Another covers fuel tank corrosion on 2018 to 2020 720S cars, caused by moisture held in a foam pad. The fourth concerns the rear cabin window on 2021 765LT coupes, which may have too little adhesive. A recall for one model year doesn't mean every car was affected, so check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, one about suspension and one listed as other. They are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a 720S Spider if the budget stretches, since evo recommends it for arriving after the coupe's early kinks were fixed. Otherwise, a later coupe with a continuous specialist history is the safer choice. Evo calls the 720S the best all-round McLaren, and CarChecker rates the engine and gearbox as fundamentally sound, particularly in cars that are driven regularly.

Skip tuned cars and anything with gaps in its history. Insist on a specialist inspection, a module scan, and proof that the accumulators and cooling system have been looked after. Budget for accumulators on any car near five or six years since the last refurbishment.

720S: common questions

What is the best 720S to buy?

The 720S Spider is the version evo recommends most highly, because it came after the coupe's production problems were sorted. A later coupe with a full specialist service history is the alternative. Avoid tuned cars.

What goes wrong with the 720S?

The main faults are worn suspension accumulators, cracked coolant hoses and pipes, and infotainment glitches. Door struts and hinges, brake calipers, the Spider roof and a flat battery after two weeks unplugged also appear in specialist reports.

Is the 720S reliable?

Mostly, if it has been maintained. CarChecker rates the engine and gearbox as fundamentally sound, and says regularly driven, specialist-maintained cars fare better than garage queens. The electronics and hydraulic suspension are the weaker areas.

How much does it cost to run a 720S?

Luxury Cars Guide starts its annual service range at $2,000 and puts major services at up to $8,000. Front big brake rotors run $800 or more each, per 720smanual.com. Evo gives UK figures of £2000 per corner for accumulators and about £10k for a gearbox rebuild.

How much is a used 720S?

Asking prices for the 152 cars we track for sale right now run from $187,859 to $1,400,886, with a median of $290,383. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the 720S been recalled?

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2018 to 2023 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
