McLaren GT buying guide
The McLaren GT is a one-generation grand tourer where model year and recall paperwork decide the purchase, and the sources point to 2023 as the year to find.
The McLaren GT as a used buy
The McLaren GT is a single generation, built from 2020 to 2023, and five NHTSA recall campaigns touch it, covering brakes, the hood latch, the airbag and the fuel tank. Open recall work on a car you are viewing is a reason to walk away.
Every GT has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 612 horsepower, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It sits on a MonoCell II-T carbon tub with butterfly doors and a 420-litre luggage bay, and it shares its architecture and engine block with the 720S. Customer deliveries began in 2020 in Pioneer and Luxe trims.
The paperwork has car-specific wrinkles. GTs built before the May 2023 cable update need proof the hood latch recall is closed, and the sources tie a few electrical faults to cars left on a charger for weeks. For a wider search, see used McLaren GT listings, every GT for sale and its market or the wider used McLaren inventory.
McLaren GT years and versions
The GT was sold in Pioneer, the comfort-biased trim, and Luxe, the sport-biased one. Car Collector International says the mechanicals are identical, so the choice is about cabin and suspension calibration. The same source lists the options that move the money: the MSO visible carbon exterior pack, the factory four-piece leather luggage set, MSO Verdant Theme, nose-lift and Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker audio. For what cars are asking, use our McLaren GT price guide.
On model years, CarsCounsel rates 2023 the best, as the most refined with the fewest early assembly inconsistencies. It calls 2021 and 2022 good, with build quality noticeably better than the launch year. The 2020 cars, in its view, need a thorough pre-purchase inspection because of early teething issues. If you are weighing rivals, our McLaren vs Ferrari comparison may help.
CarsCounsel does not class any year as one to avoid, but says to bypass any car with incomplete recall work or missing maintenance records. In 2024 the car became the GTS, with revised bumpers, wheels and interior, 14 more horsepower and slightly less weight. That is a different car from the ones covered here. Earlier McLarens have their own pages, such as our McLaren 650S and 675LT guide.

Common McLaren GT problems
Several of the faults below are recall items, and the rest come from a handful of specialist sources.
Brake line routing
A recall covers rear brake pipes that may be routed incorrectly, so the brake on the wrong side applies and a rear wheel can lock. CarsCounsel says it affects all model years, though foreignautomotive.ca describes only a small group of cars, so the VIN check settles it.
Hood latch cable
The hood release cable can have excessive tension, which could let the hood open while driving. carchecker.pro says GTs built before the May 2023 cable update need VIN proof that the work is closed.
Fuel tank corrosion
An under-tank foam pad can hold moisture, corrode the tank and cause a fuel leak. The NHTSA record for this one lists 2020 cars.
Airbag and banjo bolts
Some 2020 and 2021 cars were in a driver's airbag recall for an improperly connected restraint controller, which could leave the airbag inactive. A separate 2020 campaign covers banjo bolts missing fluid holes, which would make a brake fail at one corner.
Coolant leaks
Car Collector International calls a slow, hard-to-trace coolant leak a known pattern across the M840 engine family. Hose connections are where residue shows.
Infotainment glitches
Screens that froze or reset were most often reported on early 2020 cars. Later software updates largely fixed it, per CarsCounsel.
Flat battery effects
The 12V battery can discharge within 7 to 14 days without a charger, says carchecker.pro. PistonHeads adds that weeks or months on a trickle charge can bring power steering or nose lift faults, and that ESC errors usually cleared with the ignition on for 10 seconds, engine off.
Accumulator wear
Uneven ride height or suspension warnings can point to worn accumulators. The same checklist puts replacement at every 3 to 5 years or 25,000 to 30,000 km.
What to check on a used McLaren GT
- Verify by VIN with NHTSA that every recall is closed, especially hood latch, driver airbag, fuel tank and brake line.
- If the car was built before the May 2023 cable update, ask for proof the hood latch work was done.
- Open and close both dihedral doors several times, and treat resistance or stopping partway as a sign of hinge or strut trouble.
- Look at ride height on level ground and read the dash for suspension warnings that suggest tired accumulators.
- Inspect the glazed tailgate seals, struts and rear deck for water ingress, and the luggage-area trim for heat damage.
- Run a light along the windscreen edges for fine stress cracks that tend to spread.
- Test the IRIS screen for freezing or resetting, then check coolant level and hose connections for residue.
- Look for repaint, mismatched carbon weave and front splitter damage, and demand McLaren-authorised repair paperwork for any bodywork.
- Ask for ceramic brake rotor replacement records and judge the wear.
- Ask how the car was stored, since weeks on a trickle charger are linked to steering and nose lift faults.
- Request the full service history, including gearbox fluid changes, as CarsCounsel says the dual-clutch needs strict fluid maintenance.
McLaren GT running costs
Kelley Blue Book gives the service interval as annually or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. A UK specialist quoted by PistonHeads charges around £490 for an annual service, a little over £1,000 at 20,000 miles and just under £1,500 for the 40,000-mile job.
carchecker.pro puts four new suspension accumulators at up to €3,500 and a windscreen at up to €4,500. The warranty ran 3 years with unlimited mileage and can be extended up to 12 years from the initial service date, so find out what cover a car still has. Compare against what a McLaren costs before budgeting.
McLaren GT recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds five recall campaigns for the 2020 to 2023 GT, covering brakes, the hood latch, the driver's airbag and the fuel tank, as detailed above. A campaign filed for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so enter the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed one complaint with NHTSA, about the structure. It records no crashes, fires or injuries.
NHTSA recalls for the McLaren GT
Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2020 to 2023 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25V216000 | Apr 9, 2025 | 2020 to 2023 | Service brakes, hydraulic | A rear wheel locking condition may cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 24V661000 | Sep 10, 2024 | 2020 to 2023 | Latches/locks/linkages | A hood that opens unexpectedly while driving can obstruct the driver's view, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 22V103000 | Feb 23, 2022 | 2020 to 2021 | Air bags | A driver's air bag that does not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash. |
| 21V561000 | Jul 23, 2021 | 2020 | Service brakes, hydraulic | Brake failure in one corner can cause the vehicle to pull to one side during braking, and increase the risk of a crash. |
| 20V231000 | Apr 23, 2020 | 2020 | Fuel system, gasoline | A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. |
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the McLaren GT
Owners filed 1 complaint with NHTSA for the 2020 to 2023 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
Buy a 2023 GT if you can find one. A 2021 or 2022 car is a reasonable alternative, and a 2020 is only worth it after a thorough inspection.
Pass on any car with open recalls or gaps in its records. The one you can check cheaply is the hood latch: a pre-May 2023 build without proof of the cable fix should not leave the lot.

McLaren GT: common questions
What is the best McLaren GT to buy?
The 2023 model year is the best GT to buy. CarsCounsel rates it the most refined with the fewest early assembly inconsistencies, and 2021 and 2022 cars are also good. Pioneer and Luxe trims share the same mechanicals.
What goes wrong with the McLaren GT?
The main issues are recall items: brake line routing, the hood latch cable, a fuel tank foam pad and a driver's airbag connection. Sources also mention coolant leaks, worn suspension accumulators, windscreen cracks and electrical faults on cars left on a trickle charger. Early 2020 cars had infotainment glitches.
Is the McLaren GT reliable?
Mostly yes. PistonHeads says the GT has an excellent reputation for build quality and reliability and may be one of McLaren's most sorted cars. The dual-clutch gearbox needs strict fluid maintenance, and cars with open recalls or gaps in their records should be passed over.
How much does it cost to run a McLaren GT?
PistonHeads quotes a UK specialist at around £490 for an annual service, with the 20,000-mile visit a little over £1,000. Carchecker.pro says four accumulators can run to €3,500 and a windscreen to €4,500. Service is due annually or every 10,000 miles.
How much is a used McLaren GT?
Asking prices for the 62 cars we track for sale right now run from $110,790 to $210,594, with a median of $160,056. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the McLaren GT been recalled?
NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns filed for the 2020 to 2023 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
