McLaren 650S and 675LT buying guide
The 650S is a 12C reworked into a sharper supercar, and a good one comes down to documented service, a sound hydraulic suspension and the model year you pick.
The 650S as a used buy
A used McLaren 650S lives or dies on its service history and the state of its hydraulic suspension. The car is a 12C with roughly 25% new parts, per Car Collector International, and the 675LT is its lightweight, track-focused follow-up. Both came as coupe and Spider across the 2015 to 2017 model years.
Octane Files advises buying on history first: a regularly serviced and driven car is better than a low-mileage one that stood. Car Collector International goes further and calls a 650S with non-Retailer service history materially compromised at resale.
The suspension accumulators are wear items with a price tag, and a nose-lift motor or gearbox seal can add to it. Browse used McLaren models for sale once you know what to look for.
650S years and versions
The 650S was announced in February 2014 and keeps the 12C's carbon MonoCell tub. It gets the M838T 3,799 cc twin-turbo V8 at 641 bhp, with an 8,500 rpm red-line, new pistons, better-flowing heads and a faster-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Our McLaren 12C buying guide covers the car it grew from.
Car Collector International calls the coupe the purer driver's car, with less mechanical complexity because it has no folding-hardtop mechanism. The Spider's three-piece hardtop works in 17 seconds. Every 650S Spider for sale and every coupe have their own pages.
On years, iCarTea rates 2017 the most polished 650S, with 2016 a solid alternative. Automonitor reports hydraulic suspension seal leaks on 2015 and 2016 cars, plus cooling problems such as failing radiator connections on some early ones. That points toward 2017, or toward an earlier car with documented fixes.
The 675LT makes 666 bhp and had a factory run of 500 coupes; its listings are at every 675LT for sale. Among the special editions, the MSO 650S, 650S Le Mans and 650S Can-Am were 50 units each. A car without the MSO plaque and paperwork trail should be treated as a standard 650S. The 625C, sold in South Asia Pacific, has less power, softer springs and cast-iron discs, so check what you are looking at.

Common 650S problems
These are the faults the sources describe most clearly, with the most expensive first.
PCC accumulators
The hydraulic accumulators in the ProActive Chassis Control are wear items. Failure brings a harsh ride, dead spots in the steering and suspension warnings. Specialists quoted by Octane Files expect to refurbish them every five or six years, while IsItAGoodCar gives a 3 to 5 year lifespan.
Hydraulic suspension leaks
Seal leaks in the hydraulic suspension are reported on 2015 and 2016 cars. Ask to see evidence of any work done, and have the system pressure-tested.
Gearbox input shaft seal
A pink coolant drip from the gearbox input shaft seal can put coolant into the clutch oil, causing judder and slipping. Treat any trace of fluid there as a reason to walk away or to renegotiate.
Nose-lift motor
The electric motor for the front-axle lift can seize or fail, leaving the nose stuck raised or lowered. The lift is what gets the car over steep driveways and speed bumps, so a stuck nose is a daily nuisance.
Infotainment glitches
Early IRIS can be slow, freeze or glitch, and IRIS 2 can still be slow to boot with connectivity issues. Three of the sources we read mention it.
Battery drain
AutoWin says the cars are known to be enthusiastic about battery drain when left sitting, so a tender is advised. A car that has stood deserves a closer look.
Build quality
Complaints from this period include poorly aligned panels and glass that shattered on its own. Bubbling paint can mean moisture in the composite.
What to check on a used 650S
Use a McLaren specialist for the pre-purchase inspection and put these on the list.
- Ask for the full service record and favor a regularly driven car over a low-mileage one that stood.
- Request a pressure test of the hydraulic system, especially on 2015 and 2016 cars.
- Look for pink coolant around the gearbox input shaft and for water pump leaks.
- Listen on a cold start for a V8 that settles quickly, since a lingering tick can mean top-end work.
- Feel for a clunk on cold 1-2 shifts and hesitation on hard downshifts.
- Read the ECU fault-code history for boost faults and unauthorized map changes, and check for coolant loss.
- Cycle the Spider's roof several times and expect it to move in about 17 seconds without hesitation.
- Run the nose lift up and down repeatedly, confirm the parking sensors work and look over the front splitter for scuffs and cracks.
- Look over the paint for bubbles and listen for rattling downpipe heat shields.
- Inspect the brake discs for lipping and check the tire date codes.
- Match the model designation to the build sheet, because cars have been misrepresented as 650S, 675LT or 12C.
650S running costs
Routine servicing is budgeted at roughly $1,500 to $3,000 by AutoWin, with oil changes at $500 to $1,000. Kelley Blue Book lists a 10,000-mile or 12-month interval, with gearbox fluid refreshed at 30,000 miles or 3 years.
Repair figures from IsItAGoodCar are in pounds: a specialist accumulator set runs £1,500 to £1,800, and dealers charge £3,000 or more. Repairing the gearbox input shaft seal costs £800 to £3,000, a clutch rebuild £4,000 to £6,000 and a nose-lift motor repair £1,000 to £2,000.
McLaren's warranty is 3 years with unlimited mileage and can be extended in 12 or 24 month steps up to 12 years. AutoWin recommends the carbon-ceramic brakes if you plan to track the car.
650S recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds one recall campaign for these model years, 19V141000. It covers air bag inflators in the passenger frontal air bag modules on certain 650S and 675 Longtail cars, among other McLaren models. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so run the car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, one about air bags and one about exterior lighting. None report crashes, fires, injuries or deaths. These are reports, not proven faults.
NHTSA recalls for the 650S
Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2017 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 19V141000 | Feb 28, 2019 | 2015 to 2017 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the 650S
Owners filed 2 complaints with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2017 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
Find a 2017 650S with a complete Retailer service history, or an earlier car with documented suspension and cooling work. The coupe is the simpler car mechanically, while the Spider needs its roof tested. The 675LT is the track-focused choice. McLaren vs Ferrari is the comparison if you are weighing rivals.
Insist on a pressure-tested hydraulic system and a build sheet that matches the model being sold. Then ask for proof of when the accumulators were last refurbished, since that bill is coming on any car that cannot show it.

650S: common questions
What is the best 650S to buy?
A 2017 car is the one to find, since iCarTea calls that year the most polished 650S. Coupe buyers get less mechanical complexity because there is no folding-hardtop mechanism. Whatever the year, insist on full service history.
What goes wrong with the 650S?
The main problems are worn PCC hydraulic accumulators, coolant leaks at the gearbox input shaft seal and a failing nose-lift motor. Early IRIS infotainment can glitch, and cars left sitting can suffer battery drain. Early cars also had reported hydraulic seal leaks and cooling issues.
Is the 650S reliable?
Mostly, for a supercar, but it needs proactive maintenance. AutoWin calls a well-serviced 650S generally reliable. Neglected cars and ones that have stood are the risk.
How much does it cost to run a 650S?
AutoWin budgets routine services at roughly $1,500 to $3,000, with oil changes at $500 to $1,000. Bigger repairs are costed in pounds by IsItAGoodCar: accumulators at £1,500 to £1,800 at a specialist, and a clutch rebuild at £4,000 to £6,000. Gearbox fluid is due at 30,000 miles or 3 years.
How much is a used 650S?
Asking prices for the 22 cars we track for sale right now run from $100,099 to $449,675, with a median of $145,436. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the 650S been recalled?
NHTSA lists 1 recall campaign filed for the 2015 to 2017 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
