McLaren Artura buying guide

A used Artura is a hybrid V6 McLaren where the 2024 update is the dividing line, and the early cars bring fuel-pipe recalls and software fixes to check.

The Artura as a used buy

The used Artura splits at the 2024 update, and the sources we read lean toward the later cars. The update raised output from 680 PS to 700 PS and brought faster shift calibration, revised suspension and software changes. If you are comparing it with other used McLarens, the hybrid hardware and software are the new things to check.

Model years run from 2023 on. This is McLaren's first series-production hybrid, with a 7.4 kWh battery in the floor of the carbon tub and no reverse gear in the transmission, so the hybrid hardware and its software are where a used car's risk sits. Foreign Automotive goes as far as saying that on a young Artura, software and recall status is everything, since mechanical wear is minimal.

Launch came more than a year late, which the same publication puts down to McLaren sorting out electrical and software architecture trouble. PistonHeads finds the car works as a sporting two-seater, but says McLaren's reliability reputation and weak demand for hybrid V6s have hurt used values.

Artura years and versions

Launch cars made 680 PS (671 bhp) combined, according to Car Collector International. The 2024 update lifted that to 700 PS (690 bhp) and added faster shifts, revised suspension and software revisions. A Spider with a retractable hardtop arrived alongside it.

isitagoodcar.com is the most emphatic on year: it strongly prefers 2024 and later, because the early cars had multiple recalls and software issues. Some community members quoted by PistonHeads think 2024-on cars suffer fewer issues, which is opinion rather than proof. A 2025 revised Artura exists too, and owner complaints about it are very hard to find.

Because the specification changed mid-run, compare cars of the same model year among every Artura for sale and confirm which output each one has. The Artura price guide shows how the market treats each year. If a Ferrari is on your list, our 296 GTB comparison covers that match-up.

Common Artura problems

Fuel pipe detachment

Recall 23V-796 covers 269 Arturas from 2023-2024 whose low-pressure fuel pipe assembly may detach, leaking fuel and creating a fire risk; dealers replace the assembly free. Every reported failure traced to one batch of extrusions made within an hour on a single production day, according to oemdtc.com.

Loose fuel nuts

A separate recall addressed nuts on the high-pressure fuel pipe that can work loose and leak fuel. NHTSA lists it against 2023 cars.

Coolant leaks

A slow, hard-to-locate seep on the M630 hybrid installation is a known pattern. Coolant pumps have leaked as well, in some cases leading to long and costly warranty work. With three separate circuits (engine, battery, power electronics), a battery-circuit pump failure may show as a hybrid system warning.

Dead 12V system

If the DC-DC converter fails, the high-voltage battery stops charging the 12V system and the car will not start. A few drained 12V batteries and at least one electric motor failure have also been reported.

Hybrid and software glitches

Messages about reduced hybrid performance, or a drive mode that cannot be changed until the engine is restarted, have appeared on some cars. Early cars also had infotainment instability, false low-charge warnings, lost EV-only running and power cuts, mostly cleared by over-the-air and dealer updates.

Early oil leaks

Some owners saw oil leaks within the first 500 to 700 miles.

Flat battery, no reverse

With no reverse gear, the electric motor backs the car up, so a badly depleted hybrid battery leaves it unable to reverse. Charging for 30 to 60 minutes cures it, and the source calls it a design consequence rather than a defect.

Rear tire wear

Rear tires wear faster than on a 720S at the same mileage, thanks to the torque.

What to check on a used Artura

A generic scanner cannot read the hybrid battery, so several checks need McLaren's own equipment.

  • Ask for paperwork from a McLaren-authorized location showing every recall and service campaign closed out, including the fuel pipe and fuel nut recalls and the brake line recall NHTSA lists for 2023-2025 cars.
  • Have the software versions on all major modules read and confirm every update has been applied.
  • Insist on a hybrid battery health report from McLaren's diagnostic interface, since OBD2 tools cannot see the battery management data.
  • Establish whether it is a 680 PS launch car or a 700 PS update car, and ask to see its record on the high-voltage service portal.
  • Pressure-test the cooling system, then inspect the belly pan for drip staining, because the leaks can be slow and hard to place.
  • Look over the front splitter for chips or cracks, which matter if the nose lifter was not used.
  • Run a paint-depth gauge over the car and look for impact evidence around the suspension pickup points, inner sills and undertray fixings.
  • Note how worn the rear tires are and when they were last replaced.

Artura running costs

Foreign Automotive gives the schedule as annual, or at 10,000 km for the first service, with a major service at year four and a flush of all three coolant circuits at year five. Carsales.com.au reports services every 12 months or 15,000 km on Australian cars, with the first three free. For the purchase side, see how much a McLaren costs.

Hybrid system and high-voltage battery faults are estimated at £2,000 to £8,000 by isitagoodcar.com, a UK figure. PistonHeads gives the factory warranty as five years/47,000 miles, with six years/47,000 miles on the drive battery and 10 years/unlimited mileage on the body, so find out what cover remains on the car you view.

Artura recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns for the Artura. Campaign 23V796 covers 2023-2024 cars whose low-pressure fuel pipe assembly may detach and leak fuel. Campaign 22V908 covers 2023 cars whose high-pressure fuel pipe nuts may loosen, also causing a leak. Campaign 25V216 covers 2023-2025 Arturas, among other McLaren models, with brake lines that may be routed incorrectly, so the brake on the wrong side could apply and a rear wheel could lock.

Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, tagged to the fuel system, gasoline, hybrid propulsion system and power train, with no crashes, fires or injuries recorded. Complaints are reports, not proven faults. A recall filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Our verdict

Buy a 700 PS car from 2024 or later. A 2023 car is only worth considering with the recall closures documented and a battery report from McLaren's interface in hand.

Walk away from any car whose seller cannot show software and recall records. On this car, that paperwork matters more than the odometer.
