Aston Martin DB7 buying guide
A DB7 is a cheap-looking way into an Aston, but corrosion, the V12's cooling and a neglected history decide whether it is a good one.
The DB7 as a used buy
The Aston Martin DB7 rewards a buyer who checks the history and the underbody before anything else. Corroded floorpans, a worn V12 or a skipped service can cost more than the car, and the sources we read agree that a pre-purchase inspection is worth paying for.
Our guide covers the 1997 to 2003 cars in Coupe and Volante form. Two engines were offered: a supercharged 3.2-litre straight-six derived from a Jaguar unit, and from 1999 the 5.9-litre V12 Vantage. The Volante convertible arrived in 1996.
It suits someone happy to buy on condition rather than on price, and ready to put money into upkeep. Auto Express says a good one is lovely, but that you must buy with care.
DB7 years and versions
The six-cylinder car came first, with 335 hp from the supercharged 3.2-litre. It came with a Getrag five-speed manual or a GM four-speed automatic. Of 1,578 six-cylinder coupes built, Car Collector International says only 529 had the manual. Auto Express and Prestige & Performance Car both say a six is far cheaper to run than any V12 and easier to work on at home.
In 1999 the V12 Vantage replaced the six. It came with a Tremec six-speed manual or a ZF five-speed Touchtronic automatic. Car Collector International rates the six-speed manual V12 as the best of the range, and Auto Express says buyers want manual cars because the automatic is slow.
The GT and GTA arrived in 2002. The GT has 435 bhp and a six-speed manual. The GTA has the Touchtronic and 420 bhp, since the automatic could not take 435 bhp, and Car Collector International rates it less desirable than the GT. It also warns that a standard Touchtronic Vantage can be dressed up as a GTA, so only the build sheet proves it. Rarer variants include the Zagato (99 built, 440 bhp) and the Zagato-bodied DB AR1 Volante (99 made, most for the US).
Series 2 cars from 1996 gained airbags, more comfortable seats, softer damping and stronger brakes and headlights. Wings, bootlid and bonnet were composite until 1997, when a steel bonnet arrived. Our pages for the DB7 Coupe and DB7 Volante show every one for sale, and the used DB7 listings cover both.

Common DB7 problems
The faults split by engine, with rust the shared worry.
V12 overheating
Classics World says the V12 tends to suffer from hoses that collapse and a thermostat in the radiator that fails, and either one makes it overheat. The V12 also needs OAT coolant, because standard antifreeze reacts and leaves a gunge that damages the cooling system.
V12 tick
The V12 tick comes from oval bores, piston slap and knocking little ends. Prestige & Performance Car says there is no cure and a rebuild is costly.
Six-cylinder timing chains
Timing-chain tensioners can fail on the six, and rattling from the chains means they need replacing immediately. Engine and gearbox oil coolers can also leak on this engine.
Cracked exhaust manifolds
Exhaust manifolds on the six-cylinder cars can crack. Three of the sources we read mention it.
Floorpan and body rot
Floorpans are widely known as a rot trap. Six-cylinder cars are better rustproofed than V12s, which can corrode in the rear wheelarches and chassis legs.
Volante hood frame wear
On the Volante, the rubber covers on the hood irons can come adrift. The frame then wears holes in the roof.
Air-con evaporator
Evaporator failure is expensive because the dashboard has to come out to reach it.
Touchtronic gearbox
The automatic is slow, and the GTA's Touchtronic could not cope with the GT's power. A rebuild has its own price, listed below.
What to check on a used DB7
Spend the money on a specialist inspection, then use these checks at the viewing.
- Ask for the full service history from the seller of the used Aston Martin you are viewing, and check that the 7,500-mile or six-month intervals were kept.
- Look at the jacking points, radius arm mountings and front bulkhead for corrosion.
- Inspect the floorpans from underneath, and the rear wheelarches and chassis legs on a V12.
- Check that the scuttle and air-con drain tubes are clear, since blocked ones rot the double-skinned bulkhead from inside.
- Ask whether the windscreen has been replaced, because wrongly refitted plastic scuttle trim lets water in.
- Ask when the supercharger belts were last renewed, as they are due every 30,000 miles.
- Walk away from a six-cylinder car wearing V12 wheels (our Aston Martin vs Bentley page covers rivals), since the offset affects handling.
- Listen for chain rattle on a cold six-cylinder start.
- Check that a V12 has had OAT coolant, and look at the hoses for collapse.
- Treat a V12 misfire as a probable failed pencil coil and ask whether the coils have been changed.
- Inspect a Volante's roof for holes where the hood frame has worn through.
- Ask to see the build sheet if a car is sold as a GTA.
DB7 running costs
Auto Express gives the official interval as every 7,500 miles or six months, and calls the 30,000-mile service on sixes and the 45,000-mile service on V12s expensive. It puts an air-con compressor at £2,800 and a windscreen at upwards of £1,800 (UK figures).
Drive-My says the six's dual-mass clutch cannot be bought, so you need a new flywheel and clutch kit at a minimum of £2700 plus fitting. Car Collector International puts a Touchtronic rebuild at $5,000 to $9,000.
Drive-My and Prestige & Performance Car both say cheap DB7s are often neglected and may cost more to fix than a well-kept car.
DB7 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns for 1997 to 2003 DB7s. The most serious: a steering hose that may contact the left exhaust manifold and scorch through, losing power assistance (2000 to 2003); some V12s starting up on only six cylinders because of a control module fault (2000 to 2001); and weak welds on a front damper bracket that could let it separate (2000). Others cover steering column lighting switchgear (1997 to 2001) and 1997 warning chime and brake fluid lamp faults.
Owners have filed only 1 complaint with NHTSA, split across air bags, equipment, seat belts and suspension. A recall on a model year does not mean every car was affected, so run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof of completed work.

Our verdict
Buy a six-speed manual V12 Vantage if you want the version Car Collector International rates, or a six-cylinder car if running costs and home maintenance matter more. Skip a GTA unless you want the automatic, and verify the build sheet.
Check the DB7 price guide for context, then insist on a thorough service history, an underbody inspection and a specialist pre-purchase check. A cheap, neglected car is the one most likely to cost you more than a good one, and a V12 with the wrong coolant in it needs its cooling system examined before you pay.

DB7: common questions
What is the best DB7 to buy?
The six-speed manual V12 Vantage, which Car Collector International rates as the pick of the range. A six-cylinder car suits you better if lower running costs and easier work at home matter most. The GTA is rated less desirable than the GT because of its automatic.
What goes wrong with the DB7?
Corrosion, cooling and engine wear are the main problems. Floorpans rot, V12s suffer collapsing hoses and thermostat failures, and the six can have failed timing-chain tensioners and cracked manifolds. Volante roofs can be worn through by the hood frame, and air-con evaporator replacement is expensive.
Is the DB7 reliable?
Mostly only if it has been looked after. Sources say cheap, neglected cars can cost more to fix than well-kept ones. NHTSA lists 6 recalls but only 1 owner complaint, and a pre-purchase inspection is recommended.
How much does it cost to run a DB7?
Expect high servicing and repair bills. Service is every 7,500 miles or six months, and the 30,000-mile (six) and 45,000-mile (V12) services are expensive. UK figures include £2,800 for an air-con compressor and a windscreen from £1,800, while a Touchtronic rebuild is $5,000 to $9,000.
How much is a used DB7?
Asking prices for the 10 cars we track for sale right now run from $24,800 to $50,690, with a median of $35,441. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the DB7 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 1997 to 2003 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for steering. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
