Aston Martin Vantage (2019 to 2023) buying guide

The 2019 to 2023 Vantage pairs an AMG-sourced V8 with a chassis the press loves, so the buying risk is in the details: coil packs, the diff, paperwork and the V12.

The Vantage as a used buy

The 2019 to 2023 Aston Martin Vantage is a two-seat sports car with a Mercedes-AMG twin-turbo V8 and rear-wheel drive, and the likeliest glitches are electrical or electronic. Insist on a full, stamped service history and a proper underside inspection before anything else.

Aston unveiled it in November 2017 with 503 bhp from a 4.0-litre V8. Speed Luxury gives the US car 505 lb-ft of torque, a 3.5-second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of 195 mph. It shares its aluminium architecture with the DB11, though 70% of the structural parts differ, says RAC Drive.

It suits someone who wants a driver's car and can live with a 350-litre boot. For where to start looking, see our used Vantage listings and the Vantage price guide.

Vantage years and versions

Early cars had only the eight-speed ZF automatic. The Roadster followed in spring 2020 with the same engine and gearbox. Auto Express rates the automatic as arguably better in daily use than the manual, which is worth remembering if you are tempted by the stick.

The seven-speed manual first came on the AMR, of which 200 were built. From late 2021 it became a no-cost option on the standard coupe, so a manual car is no longer a rarity by definition. Our page for the standard Vantage Coupe shows what is listed.

The F1 Edition has the V8 tuned to 528 hp and a reworked eight-speed automatic. A new five-vane grille arrived from late 2021, first on the F1 Edition and then across the range, with a retrofit kit for older cars. Look at the F1 Edition Coupe if you want the most powerful V8 in this run.

The V12 Vantage arrived in spring 2022 with a 690 bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12. Only 333 coupes and 249 Roadsters were built, all sold before announcement. Autocar calls it a proper track weapon but feels the bigger engine distorts rather than enhances the driving experience. If you still want one, the V12 Coupe page tracks them. Special editions include the V600 (14 made) and the 007 (100 built).

Common Vantage problems

The sources describe a well-built car whose faults are mostly minor, with a few items worth knowing before you sign.

Coil pack failure

Water can get into the coil packs on the AMG engine, and Autocar says failure is common. An engine management light comes on, and the pack can be replaced under warranty.

Differential whine

A whining noise when cruising at speed is typically the electronic differential, per Autocar. Dealers usually replace it under warranty, so a car out of warranty is a different proposition.

Gearbox software glitches

Jerky or hesitant shifts from the ZF automatic, or slow downshifts, could be down to software rather than hardware. Ask whether the latest updates have been applied.

Electrical gremlins

Auto Express says the likeliest glitches are electrical and electronic. It also notes that some cars are barely used.

Oil cooler hoses

A September 2024 recall covered oil cooler hoses that could split and starve the engine of oil. The fix was new hoses, so confirm the work was done on any car you consider.

Paint bubbling

RAC Drive says the edges of the aluminium body panels can bubble under the paint. Look along panel edges in good light.

Seat mounting

GetCarWise lists seat mounting as the biggest MOT failure point for the Vantage, at 28 times the average car. That data is UK and covers both generations, so treat it as a prompt to check the seats, not as proof.

What to check on a used Vantage

Most of the checks come down to paperwork, the underside and cosmetic wear.

  • Ask for a complete, fully stamped service history and read through it line by line.
  • Book a specialist inspection that includes removing the protective underbody panels to see the structure.
  • Check the service record or dealer for the oil cooler hose recall work and the airbag fastener recalls.
  • Listen for a whine from the rear on a steady cruise, which points to the electronic differential.
  • Watch for an engine management light, which can point to a coil pack that has taken in water.
  • Feel for jerky upshifts or lazy downshifts from the automatic during a test drive.
  • Run a light along the panel edges for bubbling under the paint.
  • Check the front splitter, rear diffuser and diamond-cut alloys for scuffs, since the alloys are costly to refurbish.
  • Inspect the tread on the Pirelli P Zero tyres.
  • Look over the boot and cabin for damaged trim and leather, and confirm the seats sit firmly on their mounts.

Vantage running costs

Servicing is due every 12 months or 10,000 miles. Auto Express and Parkers say routine maintenance is free for the first five years, and the car carries a three-year unlimited-mileage warranty, per Parkers. Beyond that, Auto Express quotes £1,305 for the six-year/60,000-mile V8 service, then alternating visits at £650 and £765. Autocar and Parkers put servicing generally at £700 to £1,000. These are UK figures.

Spark plugs are due every 40,000 miles, at £770, or £1,050 for the V12, per Auto Express. Autocar says four new tyres run around £1000. RAC Drive lists a windscreen at about £1,256, a front bumper at £1,667 to £1,959, a headlamp at £1,430 to £1,516 and a clutch plate at £1,300. Official economy is 24.3 mpg for the V8 and 20.3 mpg for the V12.

Vantage recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds two recall campaigns for 2019 to 2023 Vantages, both for air bags. The 2019 campaign covers a passenger air bag whose locking nut fasteners may not be tightened properly. The 2019 to 2020 campaign covers front seat air bag fasteners that may not have been tightened correctly. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected.

NHTSA lists no owner complaints for these years. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

NHTSA recalls for the Vantage

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2019 to 2023 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Campaign Reported Model years Component What can happen
20V604000 Oct 2, 2020 2019 to 2020 Air bags Loose fasteners can cause the air bag to improperly deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
19V806000 Nov 12, 2019 2019 Air bags In the event of a crash necessitating passenger air bag deployment, the air bag may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury.

Our verdict

Most of the sources lean positive. Auto Express calls reliability good, and PistonHeads sees a potentially great first Aston with a strong AMG drivetrain. For most buyers the standard V8 coupe is the car to find, and the manual is a free option on later cars if you want it. The F1 Edition adds power and a reworked automatic.

See how it stacks up in Aston Martin vs Ferrari. Skip the V12 unless you want the rarity and are happy with Autocar's reservation about its driving feel. Whatever you choose, don't compromise on a full service history, an underbody inspection and proof that the recall work is done.

Vantage: common questions

What is the best Vantage to buy?

For most buyers the standard V8 Vantage Coupe is the one to find. The F1 Edition has 528 hp and a reworked automatic, and from late 2021 the manual is a no-cost option. The V12 is a rarer, track-minded car that Autocar finds less engaging to drive.

What goes wrong with the Vantage?

The reported faults are mostly minor. They include coil pack failure, differential whine, hesitant shifts that may be software, and electrical glitches. There was also a 2024 recall for oil cooler hoses, and paint can bubble at panel edges.

Is the Vantage reliable?

Mostly yes. Auto Express rates reliability as good and Autocar calls it exceptionally well built if maintained. The likeliest problems are electrical, so a full service history matters.

How much does it cost to run a Vantage?

Parkers and Autocar put servicing at £700 to £1,000, a UK figure, and routine maintenance is free for the first five years. Spark plugs cost £770 every 40,000 miles, or £1,050 for the V12, per Auto Express. Autocar puts four tyres at around £1000.

How much is a used Vantage?

Asking prices for the 78 cars we track for sale right now run from $76,449 to $285,411, with a median of $101,559. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the Vantage been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2019 to 2023 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
