Aston Martin V12 Vanquish (2002 to 2007) buying guide

The V12 Vanquish is a hand-built aluminium V12 coupe whose bills come from rusting steel subframes, a temperamental paddle-shift gearbox and accident repairs that never quite come right.

The V12 Vanquish as a used buy

The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish is a car to buy by checking the steel parts hiding under the aluminium. Corrosion in the subframes, not the engine, is where the surprises are, and Classic & Sports Car says it is becoming common.

It was built at Newport Pagnell from 2002 until July 2007, with 2,578 made in total according to RAC Drive. The structure is a bonded aluminium chassis around a carbonfibre transmission tunnel, with hand-finished aluminium panels. Power comes from a 5.9-litre V12 driving the rear wheels through a semi-automatic gearbox. You could order it as a 2+2 or as a two-seater with extra boot space.

It suits someone who wants a usable V12 grand tourer and will pay for a proper inspection first, and who has compared it with the Aston Martin DB9 and the Aston Martin DB7. Autocar calls it reliable and up to daily driving, though the clutch needs nursing in town. RAC Drive scores it 5.5 out of 10 and tells buyers to go carefully. Our guide to what an Aston Martin costs and the Aston Martin vs Ferrari comparison help set it in context.

V12 Vanquish years and versions

The standard car makes 460bhp. The V12 Vanquish S arrived in 2004 with 520bhp, new injectors, a revised ECU and cylinder heads, and forged conrods. It also got firmer suspension with a ride height 5mm lower, an improved gearbox, lower gearing and stronger front brakes, plus a new interior and front splitter. You can spot an S by its aerodynamic front splitter, the changed grille and spoiler, and the centre console trimmed in leather.

Autocar and Classic & Sports Car both rate the Sports Dynamic Pack as worth seeking out. It brought uprated suspension and brakes to 460bhp cars from 2003 and is standard on every S. Autocar also calls the 2003 Linn sound system desirable. Later cars and S models have better gear position sensors, which can be retro-fitted to earlier cars; Autocar says early cars had serious sensor trouble.

The paddle-shift is the part of the car owners like least. Classic & Sports Car says many cars have been converted to a full manual, led by Aston Martin Works, and Autocar says around half of those advertised have been. Autocar still prefers the standard automated manual. Classic & Sports Car adds that rebuilding the semi-auto with upgraded pneumatic actuators costs less than a conversion.

The last 50 cars were Ultimate Editions in Ultimate Black with an upgraded interior, built in 2007. You can browse every V12 Vanquish for sale or every Vanquish S to compare what is out there, or see used Aston Martin V12 Vanquish listings and the Vanquish price guide.

Common V12 Vanquish problems

Rust, ignition and the gearbox account for most of what the specialists warn about.

Subframe corrosion

The steel front subframes rust, sometimes the rear ones too, along with their mounting points and the undertray and wheelarch-liner mounts. Classic & Sports Car says rear subframes and anti-roll bars are now suffering as well, despite the mostly aluminium construction.

Galvanic corrosion

Steel and electrolytic corrosion are becoming common, according to Classic & Sports Car. Badly repaired panels are a particular worry, and the Vanquish is notoriously hard to return to 100% after an accident, says RAC Drive.

Gearbox and sensors

Early cars had serious gear position sensor problems, and the better later sensors can be fitted to regular cars. A whistle when pulling away may point to a worn spigot shaft bearing.

Misfires and oil leaks

Misfires often trace to oil leaks from failed PCV valves or leaking spark plug seals, and rarely to coils or plugs, says Classic & Sports Car. PistonHeads notes that coils can fail, and that oil trapped in the vacuum lines can make a good coil look dead.

Starter cable

A car that will not start most likely has a fractured bulkhead-to-starter cable. PistonHeads says the standard cable is too short and breaks from vibration.

ECU damage

Jump-starting can fry the ECUs. They are no longer available new, so they have to be rebuilt.

Cooling and belt drive

Worn auxiliary idlers squeak, and coolant can leak from the front water manifold and the thermostat-housing pipes.

Brake judder

Track use can leave the discs distorted or delaminating, which shows as juddering. AP Racing upgrades suit both models, says Classic & Sports Car.

What to check on a used V12 Vanquish

Spend most of your viewing underneath the car and in the gearbox.

  • Remove the undertray to inspect the rear legs of the front subframe, and check the subframe mounts in the body.
  • Inspect the little steel bracket on the end of every sill for rust, and look for galvanic corrosion around any poorly repaired panels.
  • Ask for the full history and walk away from damage-repaired cars.
  • Drive it and check that the gearbox works correctly and never drops into neutral on the move.
  • Check the oil level, because low oil can lead to worn valve guides or big ends.
  • Look for oil in the vacuum lines and around the spark plug seals if the engine runs rough.
  • Feel the rubbery finish on the door tweeters and the steering column, which can melt.
  • On early cars, inspect the wiring loom at the bottom of the bulkhead for chafing.
  • Listen for rattles and clonks from the suspension, which point to tired bushes, mountings and gaiters.
  • Ask whether the car has had a manual conversion or a rebuilt semi-auto, and who did the work.
  • Budget for an independent pre-purchase inspection; The Aston Advantage puts one at around £600.

V12 Vanquish running costs

Servicing is not cheap. RAC Drive puts most services at around £1,500, with rear tyres around £700 a pair. Autocar says the clutch should last up to 40,000 miles, and discs and pads about 20,000 miles, longer on S cars.

Classic & Sports Car prices a gearbox rebuild at £5000-plus and front subframe replacement at £2000-plus. It also says the gearbox and power steering benefit from fluid changes even though neither is on the service schedule. PistonHeads suggests replacing coils a whole bank at a time, with labor at about £1,000. These are UK figures.

The engine itself is not the worry. Classic & Sports Car says it easily passes 150,000 miles with proper maintenance, and that higher-mileage cars with full histories are fine.

V12 Vanquish recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists one recall campaign for 2002 to 2007 cars. Campaign 04V538000 covers 2002 to 2005 Vanquish models, and concerns the throttle pedal assembly, which can become displaced from its housing. A campaign for those years does not mean every car was affected, so check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed no complaints with NHTSA for these model years.

V12 Vanquish fair values by trim and year

Our fair value is what comparable cars, same trim and model year with typical miles, are listed at in our latest market data. A car well under it is worth a close look; a car well over it needs a reason.

Trim Model year Fair value Typical miles
V12 Vanquish 2004 $76,072 19,800
V12 Vanquish 2003 $72,110 14,800
V12 Vanquish 2002 $62,930 15,900
S 2006 $91,326 11,400
S 2005 $76,739 17,600

Our verdict

Buy a car with a full history and a clean underside, and spend the money on the inspection. An S, or a 460bhp car with the Sports Dynamic Pack, gets you the uprated suspension and brakes. Early gearbox sensor trouble is another reason to prefer later cars or to ask what has been replaced.

Skip anything with accident repairs, and as RAC Drive advises, don't pick the cheapest car on the market; the wider used Aston Martin listings show what else is out there. Insist on seeing the subframes with the undertray off, and on a gearbox that never drops out of gear.

V12 Vanquish: common questions

What is the best V12 Vanquish to buy?

Buy a Vanquish S, or a 460bhp car with the Sports Dynamic Pack, in either case with a full history. The S has 520bhp, firmer suspension, stronger front brakes and an improved gearbox. The pack gives earlier cars uprated suspension and brakes, and later cars have better gear position sensors.

What goes wrong with the V12 Vanquish?

Corrosion of the steel subframes, their mounts and the rear anti-roll bars is the headline problem. Classic & Sports Car also lists oil leaks that cause misfires, a fragile starter cable, ECUs that get damaged by jump-starting and a gearbox that needs care. Early cars had gear position sensor trouble.

Is the V12 Vanquish reliable?

Mostly, if it has been maintained. Autocar calls it reliable and up to daily driving, and Classic & Sports Car says the engine easily passes 150,000 miles with proper maintenance. The weak points are corrosion, the gearbox and ignition.

How much does it cost to run a V12 Vanquish?

Expect big bills. RAC Drive puts most services at around £1,500 and rear tyres at around £700 a pair. Classic & Sports Car puts a gearbox rebuild at £5000-plus and subframe replacement at £2000-plus, all UK figures.
