Aston Martin DB11 buying guide

The DB11 is a fast, usable Aston Martin, but early electronics, costly interior repairs and a V12 that is hard to service make the version and the car's history matter.

The DB11 as a used buy

The Aston Martin DB11 is a car to buy on condition and version, not on badge. Three problem areas decide most purchases: first-year electronics, interior leather that delaminates, and an airbag recall history that you should confirm has been dealt with.

It replaced the DB9 and sits on an all-new, stiffer and lighter structure. The coupe was unveiled at the March 2016 Geneva show, and it was replaced by the DB12 in 2023. Our tracked US model years run from 2017 to 2023, across the V8 Coupe, Volante, V12 and AMR.

Auto Express calls it an all-time Aston highlight. The rear seats suit only people under five feet eight, and boot space is 270 litres (206 for the Volante), so think of it as a two-seater with extras. If you are weighing it against the car it replaced, our DB9 buying guide covers that one.

DB11 years and versions

The launch car was the 600bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 with an eight-speed automatic, Aston's first turbocharged series-production engine. By June 2017 a second engine had joined it, a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 making 503bhp and supplied by Mercedes-AMG. The Volante convertible arrived in October 2017 and is V8 only. Its fabric roof lowers in 14 seconds and closes in 16, including on the move up to 31mph, according to Fuel the Passion.

The 630bhp AMR replaced the regular V12 in May 2018. For 2022, introduced in July 2021, the V8 gained 527bhp and the V12 dropped the AMR name. The V8 car weighs 115 kg less than the V12, and its weight split is 49/51 front to rear, where the V12 runs 51/49. Fuel the Passion thinks the V8 Coupe may be the best all-round DB11, lighter, sharper and more agile than the original V12, and CarsCounsel says the V8 models are very quick with more sensible running costs. You can browse V8 Coupes for sale and Volantes separately.

The same source calls the AMR the most desirable regular-production V12, but says condition should outweigh the badge. Our AMR listings and V12 listings are worth comparing on that basis. Special specifications such as the Shadow Edition add appeal without making the car mechanically better.

CarsCounsel rates 2021 to 2023 the best late-generation choice, with improved interior assembly and electronics, and says the 2017 model year, the first and V12 only, should be approached carefully.

Common DB11 problems

The faults below are those reported by owners and the specialist press we read, most serious first.

Early electrical faults

Auto Express says early cars gave the most electronic trouble: the navigation and alarm can misbehave, and key fob batteries drain fast. Exotic Car Hacks adds start-up problems, with air conditioning or navigation not working and some cars refusing to start.

Infotainment glitches

Owners report laggy infotainment, random reboots and Bluetooth drops. CarsCounsel is the source for this one, so test the system for several minutes on a drive.

Interior leather delamination

Leather on the dashboard and door panels can bubble or delaminate, and the repair is expensive. Several of the sources we read raise it, so inspect every panel closely.

V12 differential noise

Some V12 owners report differential whine or clunking. Listen on a slow drive, on and off the throttle, before you commit.

Wastegate actuator rattle

Turbo wastegate actuators on V8 and V12 cars can rattle on cold starts. GetCarWise puts a typical independent garage repair at £500 to £800, a UK figure.

Air-conditioning failure

A few owners have had air conditioning that blows warm air, caused by a leak, a compressor failure or a failed condenser.

Panel corrosion

The aluminum panels can suffer localized corrosion, and bubbling paint is possible. Look closely along edges and around fittings.

V12 spark plug access

Changing the V12's spark plugs is labor-intensive because the engine must be partially dropped or extensively disassembled, according to CarsCounsel. Ask when it was last done.

What to check on a used DB11

Use this list at a viewing, then have a specialist repeat it properly.

  • Confirm the exact engine and any AMR paperwork against the delivery documents, and read the full service book.
  • Check the VIN at NHTSA's lookup for open recalls and ask for proof that recall work was done.
  • Run the infotainment, sat-nav, alarm and air conditioning for a full drive, and ask whether the key fob battery has gone flat.
  • Start the engine cold and listen for a rattle from the turbos, which can point to the wastegate actuators.
  • Inspect carbon-ceramic brake discs and pads for wear and damage.
  • Press and look over the dashboard and door-panel leather for bubbling or lifting.
  • Examine the aluminum panels and paint for bubbling or localized corrosion.
  • On a V12, ask whether the bonnet-vent water-shield service action has been completed, and listen for differential whine or clunking.
  • On a Volante, cycle the roof and look for damp in the carpets, boot or roof storage.
  • Check the anti-roll bar links for wear, which GetCarWise lists as the biggest MOT failure point on the DB11.
  • Book a pre-purchase inspection with a marque specialist.

DB11 running costs

Auto Express gives service intervals as 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Minor and Major services alternate at £650 and £760 for the V8, or £740 and £855 for the V12. Every fifth service costs £1,305 for V8s and £1,450 for V12s. These are UK figures.

Auto Express also quotes £2,400 for a pair of front brake discs (parts only), £1,000 for a set of pads and typically £350 per corner for tyres. The V12 plug job and any leather repair come on top, so leave room in the budget. Our price guide shows what the cars themselves cost.

DB11 recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds four recall campaigns for the DB11. Three cover airbags: a driver's airbag that could deploy unexpectedly in 2017 to 2018 cars because of insufficient grounding, passenger airbag locking nuts that may not be tightened properly in 2018 to 2019 cars, and front seat airbag fasteners that may not have been tightened correctly in 2017 and 2019 cars. The fourth, for 2017 cars, covers a tire pressure monitoring system that may be incorrectly calibrated so the low-pressure warning does not come on when it should.

A campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. NHTSA lists no owner complaints for these model years.

Campaign Reported Model years Component What can happen
20V604000 Oct 2, 2020 2017 to 2019 Air bags Loose fasteners can cause the air bag to improperly deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
19V806000 Nov 12, 2019 2018 to 2019 Air bags In the event of a crash necessitating passenger air bag deployment, the air bag may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury.
18V065000 Jan 19, 2018 2017 to 2018 Air bags If the driver air bag inadvertently deploys, it can increase the risk of injury and a crash.
17V411000 Jun 29, 2017 2017 Tires If the driver is not warned that a tire is under-inflated, continued use may result in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Our verdict

For most buyers, the V8 Coupe is the one to find. Both Fuel the Passion and CarsCounsel favor it, citing agility and lower running costs than the V12. Take the V12 or AMR if you want the bigger engine, but accept the plug service and the differential question. Look for a 2021 to 2023 car if you can, and be careful with a 2017.

Insist on the full service book, closed recalls and a specialist inspection. Then test every electronic function and check the leather panel by panel, since those are the repairs that hurt.

DB11: common questions
