Aston Martin V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage (2006 to 2018) buying guide

Rusting steel subframes and clutches that can fail before 30,000 miles are the first checks on a used V8 Vantage; the 4.7 is the engine to find.

The V8 Vantage as a used buy

On a used Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the steel subframes and the clutch decide whether you have found a good car. Retro Motor reports clutch failures at under 30,000 miles, and a rusty subframe should end a viewing.

The Henrik Fisker-designed car was shown at Geneva in 2005 as a 2006 model and ran through 2018. It sits on the bonded aluminum VH architecture shared with the DB9, but is 25cm shorter, according to Which Car. It came as a Coupe and a Roadster, and the bigger-engined cars have their own V12 Vantage listings.

Car & Classic calls a manual car a good choice if it comes with complete Aston Martin servicing records and proof the battery was looked after. Cars like that turn up among our used V8 Vantage listings, and they are the ones worth the trip.

V8 Vantage years and versions

The 2006 car had a 4.3-liter dry-sump V-8 and a six-speed manual. Sportshift, an automated manual developed by Prodrive, followed in the second quarter of 2007. Early cars have yellow LED readouts in the instrument panel, changed to white soon after launch, and much of the switchgear and audio is Volvo and Ford parts.

The big change came in May 2008, when the engine grew to 4735 cc with a forged steel crankshaft. Hagerty adds a modified clutch and flywheel, Bilstein dampers and stiffer springs to that update. Autocar gives the 4.7 as 420bhp and 347lb ft, against 380bhp and 302lb ft for the 4.3. Car & Classic calls the 4.7 the more developed engine, a reason to begin the search at 2008.

Gearboxes sort the later cars. The V8 Vantage S arrived in January 2011 with Sportshift II as its only transmission. The 2013 SP10 had a manual as standard, and the 2014 V8 Vantage GT offered manual or Sportshift II in both body styles. Car & Classic also says the coupe is lighter and more commonly available than the roadster, and Which Car expects manual cars, being scarcer than automated ones, to hold more collector interest.

The special editions are small runs. The 2017 GTS was built in 100 examples, all for the United States, and the GT8 coupe was capped at 150. Condition and history matter more than a badge on a daily driver. We track every Roadster and Coupe for sale if you want to compare specific cars.

Common V8 Vantage problems

The buyer's guides keep returning to a short list of faults.

Rusting steel subframes

The steel subframes can rust, and structural rot means replacement. Prestige & Performance Car and Hagerty both advise leaving a car with rusty subframes alone.

Clutch wear

Hagerty says many six-speed manual cars have clutches fried by owners who ride the pedal. Retro Motor's reports of failure under 30,000 miles come with a note that gentle use could double the life.

Sportshift fluid leaks

The ASM pump and pipework on Sportshift cars can fail and dump all their fluid. NHTSA's records include two recalls for hydraulic leaks from connectors, covered below.

Valve shim tapping

A tapping noise from the 4.7 is normally shim adjustment. Left until the gap grows too big, the cam lobes can punch a hole in the shims.

Sat-nav and electrics

The flip-up sat-nav screen runs on plastic gears that turn brittle with age and break. Hagerty also reports owners complaining of the usual electrical issues, navigation included.

Door struts

Struts weaken over time until the door drops onto your shin. They are cheap to replace.

Early trim and belt squeal

Aluminum trim on early cars can corrode and whiten, on the mirror stays, door bottoms and interior door handles. Alternator belts can also squeal when cold.

What to check on a used V8 Vantage

Bring a specialist if you can, and work through these at the viewing.

  • Ask for exhaustive service documentation, ideally from an Aston Martin specialist, and treat a thin file as a reason to pass.
  • Look at the steel subframes from underneath for rust, since structural rot means replacement.
  • Ask a manual car's seller for the clutch invoice, and watch for slip on the test drive.
  • Pull the oil dipstick before the engine has run, then look around the timing cover for leaks.
  • Start a 4.7 cold and listen for tapping from the valve gear, and for a squealing alternator belt.
  • Look around the ASM pump and pipework on a Sportshift car for fluid.
  • Cycle a Roadster's roof several times, and pass on the car if the seller refuses.
  • Feel inside the footwells and carpets for damp, which points to blocked body drain holes.
  • Swing each door wide and see whether the strut holds it open.
  • Run the sat-nav screen up and down and listen for grinding from the gears.
  • Examine the mirror stays, door bottoms and interior door handles of an early car for whitened aluminum.
  • Ask whether the battery has been kept on a trickle charger, since a flat one can cause many faults.

V8 Vantage running costs

Hagerty calls a clutch replacement easily a $4000 expense. In the UK, Retro Motor warns that a car without receipts may be due a £2,500 clutch.

The same source puts an annual service at as much as £1,000, or closer to £700 if you shop around. Its figure for tires is around £200 each, with the rears sometimes gone in under 10,000 miles.

Prestige & Performance Car quotes around £1,500 to take a subframe off, clean it and re-powdercoat it. Door struts are small money by comparison, according to Hagerty. Our guide to Aston Martin ownership costs covers the wider picture.

V8 Vantage recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns across these model years. Two cover accelerator or throttle pedal arms that may break (2008 to 2014, and 2012 to 2014), and one a front suspension arm cam bolt that could crack (2007 to 2008). Two involve hydraulic fluid leaks from transmission connectors on Sportshift cars, one for 2011 to 2014 cars with the seven-speed and one for 2012 cars with the six-speed.

A software campaign for 2011 to 2012 cars may send the transmission to neutral or trigger clutch protection mode. The rest cover seats (2006 to 2014), latches and locks (2010 to 2016) and a tire standards issue on 2010 to 2012 V12 Vantage Coupes. Each campaign names certain vehicles only, so enter the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 19 complaints with NHTSA, 10 of them about exterior lighting, though complaints are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Find a 4.7-liter manual from 2008 or later, with a full specialist history, documented battery care and a clutch invoice. Autocar calls the 4.7 rock solid, and Which Car says the V8 powertrain lasts if properly maintained. The price guide shows where the market sits by year.

Sportshift cars carry a record of fluid leaks and a software recall, so a manual saves worry as well as earning collector interest. Whatever you buy, get under it first: a rusty subframe is a reason to walk away, and structural rot means replacement.

V8 Vantage: common questions

What is the best V8 Vantage to buy?

A 4.7-liter manual from 2008 or later, ideally a coupe, with a full Aston Martin service history. The 4.7 is the more developed engine, and the coupe is lighter and easier to find than the roadster. Among later cars, the SP10 had a manual as standard and the GT offered one.

What goes wrong with the V8 Vantage?

Clutch wear and rusting steel subframes come first. Sportshift cars can lose fluid from the ASM pump and pipework, some 4.7 engines tap from shim wear, and the sat-nav screen gears can break. Door struts weaken with age.

Is the V8 Vantage reliable?

The V8 engine has a good name: Autocar calls the 4.7 rock solid and Which Car says it is durable if properly maintained. The car around it is less clear-cut, with clutch wear, electrical complaints and 9 NHTSA recall campaigns across the model years.

How much does it cost to run a V8 Vantage?

The clutch is the big item, at about $4000 according to Hagerty or £2,500 in the UK per Retro Motor. Retro Motor puts an annual service at up to £1,000 and tires at around £200 each. Prestige & Performance Car quotes around £1,500 to treat a subframe.

How much is a used V8 Vantage?

Asking prices for the 45 cars we track for sale right now run from $22,127 to $210,894, with a median of $52,380. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the V8 Vantage been recalled?

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns filed for the 2006 to 2018 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for power train. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
