Aston Martin DBS Superleggera buying guide
The DBS Superleggera is a 715 hp V12 flagship with carbon-ceramic brakes and a few known leaks, so the inspection matters more than the version you pick.
The DBS Superleggera as a used buy
The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is a car to buy on its oil pan and timing cover, not its looks. Both are listed as leak points, and a leak left alone can lead to severe engine damage. It was unveiled in 2018 as the flagship that replaced the Vanquish S, and it covers the 2019 to 2023 model years as coupe and Volante.
It uses a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 with 715 hp and 664 lb-ft, sent to the rear wheels through a ZF 8-speed automatic. The platform is the DB11's, though only the doors and glass carry over unchanged. The engine is the DB11 AMR's with electronic changes that add boost, and Aston swapped in a stronger ZF 8HP95 gearbox to cope.
It suits someone who wants a V12 grand tourer and will pay a specialist to look after it. Browse used DBS listings once you know what a good one looks like, or compare with the cheapest DBS listings and Aston Martin vs Ferrari rivals.
DBS Superleggera years and versions
The standard car is the one most buyers will meet. Its name means 'super light', a reference to the carbon-fiber body, and it has carbon-ceramic brakes. The Volante convertible arrived in 2020 with a fabric roof and weighs 4,107 pounds, 300 pounds more than the coupe.
Updates were small. For 2021 Aston added the Studio Collection package, an optional full titanium exhaust and black chrome badging. For 2022 the Superleggera name was dropped from the title, a 21-inch wheel design arrived and the Create, Accelerate and Inspire interior themes were introduced.
2023 was the last year and brought the 770 Ultimate, limited to 499 cars: 300 coupes and 199 Volantes. It makes 759 hp, with a stiffer front cross-member, a solid-mounted steering column and its own vents and splitter. Car Collector International calls it the clear collectible of the range.
Rarer editions exist: a 007 Edition limited to 25 cars and a 50th anniversary On Her Majesty's Secret Service coupe limited to 50. For resale, Luxury Products World suggests a 2019 car with the carbon roof, interior, vents and exterior pack, in a strong color combination. Common DBS Superleggera problems
The V12 gets a good report, and the faults below are mostly leaks, water and electronics.
Oil pan and timing cover leaks
A leaking oil pan and timing cover are named as the main issues, and ignoring them can lead to severe engine damage. Exotic Car Hacks and Luxury Products World both flag them.
Water in spark plug wells
Rain or wash water can get in past the inner bonnet vents and pool near the coil packs and plug cavities. Expect misfires and an engine management light if it does. Carchecker.pro notes the May 2019 water-shield service action covers the DB11 V12, not the DBS.
Coolant loss
Some cars use coolant gradually with no visible leak, according to Carchecker.pro. Treat a low reservoir as a question for the seller.
Electrical and exhaust faults
Reports include exhaust gasket leaks, faulty O2 sensors and the stereo cutting out at random. The headlight switch is also described as a known fragile part.
Squealing brakes
Owners often complain of squeal from the brakes, but the sources say it does not affect safety. It is a nuisance rather than a reason to walk away.
What to check on a used DBS Superleggera
Spend on a proper inspection, and work through these points at the viewing. If you are cross-shopping, Aston Martin vs McLaren and Aston Martin vs Lamborghini are worth a look.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection with a reputable shop or authorized dealer before any money moves.
- Look under the engine and around the timing cover for oil weeping, and check the oil pan for wet seams.
- Check beneath the inner bonnet vents, the spark plug cavities and the coil packs for water, and ask whether shields or remedial work were fitted.
- Inspect the carbon-ceramic discs for deep scoring, cracks or glazing, and ask for a disc thickness measurement.
- Arrange to see the engine started from cold, and set aside half an hour or more for the test drive.
- Test the infotainment, Bluetooth, navigation and audio for at least 10 minutes, and look for moisture around the dashboard and A-pillars.
- Ask Aston Martin to check the car's campaigns, including RA-01-1327 and RA-01-1418, and confirm the airbag recalls were completed.
- Check the tires are the specified Pirelli P Zero A7A AM-marked type, and compare rear wear with the front, since the rears wear faster.
- Ask whether the coolant level has needed topping up, and check the reservoir yourself.
- Operate the headlight switch repeatedly and confirm every setting works.
DBS Superleggera running costs
PistonHeads lists dealer fixed-price servicing at £790 to £900 every year or 10,000 miles, a UK figure. Air and pollen filters fall due every 20,000 miles at £315 and £135, and spark plugs every seven years or 70k miles at £1,150.
The big bills are brakes and tires. Carchecker.pro puts a full set of carbon-ceramic discs at about €20,000, and Exotic Car Hacks says a set of high-performance tires runs around $1,500 to $2,500. The factory warranty is 3 years with unlimited miles, plus a 10-year anti-perforation cover. See our Aston Martin price guide for what the cars cost to buy, and how much an Aston Martin is more broadly.
DBS Superleggera recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds two recall campaigns for these years, both for airbags. Campaign 19V806000 covers the 2019 DBS Superleggera coupe, where the passenger airbag locking nuts may not be tightened properly. Campaign 20V604000 covers 2019 to 2020 cars, where fasteners holding the front seat airbags may have been fitted loose.
A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected. Check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy. NHTSA has no owner complaints on file for these model years.
NHTSA recalls for the DBS Superleggera
Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2019 to 2023 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20V604000 | Oct 2, 2020 | 2019 to 2020 | Air bags | Loose fasteners can cause the air bag to improperly deploy, increasing the risk of injury. |
| 19V806000 | Nov 12, 2019 | 2019 | Air bags | In the event of a crash necessitating passenger air bag deployment, the air bag may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury. |

Our verdict
Buy a DBS Superleggera if you want a flagship V12 and can fund specialist care and the occasional four-figure repair bill. Carchecker.pro calls the V12 generally reliable, with major mechanical failures uncommon when it is maintained. The 770 Ultimate is the one collectors will want, but it is a different purchase from a standard car.
Skip any car with oil on the engine or water in the plug wells unless the price reflects the repair. Insist on a documented service history, a disc measurement and proof the airbag recalls were done. Check the tires for the right Pirelli marking before you sign.
