Mercedes-Benz reportedly delays US GLC production to May 2030

Mercedes has not confirmed the report, which says the crossover would stay on German-built imports for years longer than first planned.

Mercedes-Benz has rescheduled US production of the GLC at its Alabama plant to May 2030, Automotive News reports, citing people familiar with the plans. The crossover was originally to be built there starting in November 2027, according to autoevolution.

Mercedes has not officially confirmed the change.

Mercedes sold almost 54,000 GLCs in the US from January through September, nearly a quarter of its US volume excluding vans, according to Automotive News Research & Data Center figures cited by CarBuzz.

Mercedes won't discuss timing

Motor1 reports that a Mercedes spokesperson declined to give an update on production timing or on where an individual future model will be built. The company says its planned US investment of $7 billion through 2030 is unchanged.

In March 2026, Mercedes said it would put $4 billion into the Alabama plant through 2030 to boost SUV production. The plant currently builds the GLS and GLE and their electric counterparts.

A tariff problem and a next-generation GLC

Until the Alabama start, the GLC depends on German-built imports, which face a 15% import tariff, Car and Driver reports.

Reports say Mercedes is holding out for the next-generation GLC, internally called V255, rather than retooling for the current 254-series model. Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions, put the case in financial terms to CarBuzz: "Investing in the plant for about half a life cycle and then having to retool for the next-generation GLC doesn’t make a lot of sense financially,"

Mercedes has not said whether it will confirm the May 2030 date or raise GLC prices to offset tariffs. It is also unknown how much the delay will add to its tariff bill. CarBuzz says the Trump administration is considering a tariff-relief program for automakers that invest in US production, and whether that could change the plan is open too.

What the used market looks like
