BMW X6 M (E71) buying guide
The E71 X6 M's first-generation S63 V8 punishes missing service history, so engine paperwork matters more than mileage when you pick one.
The E71 X6 M as a used buy
Buy an E71 X6 M on its engine file, not its odometer. Every one runs the first version of the S63 twin-turbo V8, and M Buyers Guide says that version has a much worse record than later ones. The carmaker responded with technical bulletins, free service actions and longer warranty cover aimed at the valve stem seals, the injectors and the crankcase vent line, so a car with no proof of that work is a gamble.
BMW M's first SUV, alongside the X5 M, was sold in the US from 2010 to 2014. It makes 555 hp and 500 lb-ft through a six-speed automatic and xDrive with a torque-vectoring rear axle, and it rides on Adaptive Drive with self-leveling rear air springs. Early cars seat four.
Auto Express warns that petrol X6s are very costly to run, and the S63's history suggests why. Start with the used X6 M listings, or the wider used BMW stock, and look for cars that come with receipts.
E71 X6 M years and versions
There are two versions to choose from. The original E71 X6 M ran from 2010 into early 2012, and the facelift (LCI) arrived in March 2012 with a tweaked nose and optional LED headlights. Each has its own page: the E71 X6 M and the E71 X6 M LCI. If you want the newer cars for comparison, see our F86 X6 M guide.
A five-seat layout became available in the US for 2012, and earlier cars are four-seaters only. Settle whether you need the rear middle seat before you narrow the search.
Build date matters less than what was done to the car. BMW's free injector replacement covered cars built through April 2013, and two separate service actions replaced the crankcase vent line on every X5 M and X6 M. A dealer can tell you what was done to a given car, so a later build is no substitute for that check.
For equipment, Auto Express suggests looking for Nappa leather, the Media Package, active steering and self-leveling rear air suspension.

Common E71 X6 M problems
Heat in the engine bay is blamed for several of the faults below. The first two carry the largest repair estimates the sources give.
Turbocharger failure
The two turbos sit in the hot V, where heat ages seals and the oil and coolant lines. A turbo starved of oil can seize, with blue or white smoke, lost power and boost faults. M Buyers Guide rates it high severity and estimates the repair at $8,000.
Valve stem seals
Heat hardens the seals, so oil leaks past the valves and burns. The engine can stay in the car, but the job is long, and the estimate is $6,000. Per BimmerBench, BMW's bulletin calls for a full oil-consumption test before seals are replaced when heavy oil use is the only complaint.
Injector failure
The early piezo injectors fail, often on a cold start, with rough running, misfires and a warning light. BMW's free service action replaced injectors on cars built through April 2013, and coverage on 2010 to 2012 cars was extended to 10 years or 120,000 miles, which has now run out. One injector costs about $1,000 and all eight about $4,500.
Coolant leaks
The cooling system is large and plastic-heavy, and pumps, hoses and pipes can leak or fail with age, risking overheating. Hot-vee coolant leaks are well known, and each is a four-figure bill.
Crankcase vent line
The line can turn brittle and break, which causes rough running. BMW swapped it out across the whole X5 M and X6 M line through two service actions, the first for 2009 to April 2011 and the second for March 2011 to 2014.
Ignition coils and plugs
Coil failure on S63 engines under 30k miles is described as common, possibly from engine bay heat. Stock plugs last about 40,000-50,000 miles and coils about 50,000-70,000, according to BimmerBench, which also lists misfires from coils and injectors.
Oil use and rod bearings
S63 engines use oil between changes, and you may find wet oil behind the engine or near the turbos. Rod bearing wear is discussed on early cars, so a car that drinks oil deserves more questions than a quick top-up.
Engine-bay partitions
Heat can break up the partitions in the engine bay. Water then reaches the engine and causes electrical faults.
What to check on a used E71 X6 M
- Ask for receipts covering valve stem seals, turbos, injectors and cooling work, and treat a car with none as one that needs the work priced in.
- Ask a BMW dealer to check the car's VIN and confirm the coolant pump recall and both the injector and crankcase vent line service actions were completed.
- Watch the tailpipes for blue smoke on a cold start and again under hard acceleration.
- Look over the top of the engine, the back of the V and the ground beneath the car for wet oil or dried coolant.
- Sniff for a sweet smell after a drive, which can mean a bad coolant hose near a turbocharger.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection and fault-code scan with a shop that knows the S63, and ask for the rear differential bolts and carrier to be checked for stress damage, which AutoTrader.ca says is rare.
- Check that the car sits level and that no suspension or Adaptive Drive warnings show on the dash.
- Confirm all four tires are the same type, run-flat or conventional.
- Listen for noise or vibration from the front driveshaft on a 2011 car built between April and November 2010, since a recall replaces that part.
E71 X6 M running costs
M Buyers Guide puts an oil service at about $275, due yearly or every 7.5k miles, and spark plugs at about $600 every 30k to 60k miles. Tires come to about $1,800 a set and a brake job about $2,200.
BimmerBench has plugs due every 3rd oil service on M models rather than every 6th. AutoTrader.ca advises assuming a used X6 M needs tires, pads, rotors and a full fluid service until records show otherwise.
The big bills sit in the engine: $8,000 for a turbo repair, $6,000 for valve stem seals and about $4,500 for all eight injectors, on the same source's numbers. Our BMW X6 M price guide tracks the purchase side, and these are the bills that follow. The cheapest X6 M listings are where such bills tend to matter most.
E71 X6 M recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns for 2010 to 2014 cars. The most relevant to the engine is the electric auxiliary water pump, whose circuit board can overheat, covering certain 2011 and 2012 X6 M (2010 is also named). Five more cover air bag inflators, and there are also fuel system and visibility campaigns. A campaign filed for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed 121 complaints with NHTSA, most about the engine (47), then power train (32) and air bags (28). They include 8 reported fires. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict
Either version can work, provided the paperwork shows the valve stem seals, injectors, crankcase vent line, turbo and cooling work were dealt with. Without it, price that work in. Ownership risk is rated high, and AutoTrader.ca recommends buying through certified pre-owned with an extended warranty and a full pre-purchase inspection.
Walk away from a car with blue smoke on a cold start, wet oil around the turbos or an open water pump recall. Before you pay, have a dealer confirm the recall and service actions are closed and a specialist scan the car for fault codes.

E71 X6 M: common questions
What is the best E71 X6 M to buy?
The best E71 X6 M is whichever car has documented engine work and the injector and crankcase vent line actions confirmed done, whether it is the original or the LCI. Five seats arrived for 2012 if you need them. M Buyers Guide and AutoTrader.ca both stress records and a specialist inspection.
What goes wrong with the E71 X6 M?
The big ones are turbo failure, valve stem seals, injectors, coolant leaks and the crankcase vent line. Ignition coils and oil use also come up. The major engine repairs run to four figures.
Is the E71 X6 M reliable?
No, the E71 X6 M is not a reliable car to buy without proof of repairs. M Buyers Guide rates ownership risk as high and says the first S63 has fared much worse than later versions. Receipts for the engine work make the difference.
How much does it cost to run an E71 X6 M?
Expect about $275 for an oil service and about $600 for spark plugs, per M Buyers Guide. Tires run about $1,800 and a brake job about $2,200. The same source estimates a turbo repair at $8,000 and valve stem seals at $6,000.
How much is a used E71 X6 M?
Asking prices for the 24 cars we track for sale right now run from $11,190 to $21,700, with a median of $16,808. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the E71 X6 M been recalled?
NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns filed for the 2010 to 2014 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
