Aston Martin DBX (and DBX707) buying guide
A used DBX is fast and practical, but its weak points are electrical and suspension-related, so completed recalls and a servicing dealer nearby count for more than the badge.
The DBX as a used buy
The Aston Martin DBX needs a careful look at its electrics, its recall paperwork and its air suspension before you commit. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is the part sources are happiest with: CarChecker and UsedCarStats call it strong, and place the trouble in Aston's electrical systems, build quality and air suspension.
This guide covers the first generation from 2021, including the DBX707 and the later DBX S. Every DBX has a Mercedes-sourced V8 and all-wheel drive. It weighs at least 2.2 tonnes, rides on air suspension with adaptive dampers and has six driving modes. Boot space is 638 litres, and a factory towbar, at extra cost, allows towing up to 2,700kg.
Auto Express rates the DBX brilliant to drive, with a gorgeous interior, but notes that dealers have not always fixed niggles. That makes the location of the nearest Aston dealer part of the purchase, so filter used DBX listings by distance from one.
DBX years and versions
The original DBX has 542bhp and does 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 181mph. The DBX707 arrived in spring 2022 with 697bhp (707PS). It gets quicker-spooling ball-bearing turbos, an ECU remap and a new exhaust, and it reaches 62mph in 3.3 seconds. It also drops the torque-converter gearbox for a nine-speed wet-clutch unit and has carbon-ceramic brakes as standard. PistonHeads calls the 707 justifiably the more popular car, at seven in every ten DBXs sold. Each has its own market page: the DBX 707 and the standard DBX. If the Urus is on your list too, read Lamborghini Urus vs DBX.
Aston made small quality and running-gear improvements soon after launch, so a slightly newer car is the better choice. 2022 model year cars apparently bring suspension and reliability revisions, according to Auto Thoughts, along with a mild unofficial facelift: matt plastic steering wheel controls and no leather flaps beside the centre console. Aston steering wheels wear poorly, and the Comfort wheel is much better but rare on early cars.
The proper facelift came in April 2024. From then the 707 was the only powertrain, and the cabin was refreshed around a completely new infotainment system. Pre-facelift infotainment is disappointing, and the later one is much better. The 717bhp DBX S followed in April 2025, with a carbon-fibre roof, a unique grille and exclusive trim options.
Spec counts for more than year, say Luxury Products World and Auto Thoughts: unusual colour combinations and carbon fibre packs are the ones buyers favor. If you are weighing a pricier spec against a plainer one, the DBX price guide shows what each model year is listed at, and how much an Aston Martin costs gives wider context.
Common DBX problems
Most of the trouble sits in the electrics, the suspension and a handful of recall items.
Weak battery and electrics
A DBX that is not driven weekly can drain its battery, which then upsets the windows, locking and mirrors. A battery conditioner helps, according to PistonHeads, Auto Express and CarChecker.
Fusebox cable recall
Recall 24V-255 covers 2,902 DBXs built May 2020 to September 2023, where the battery fusebox cable nuts can loosen. The result can be stalling, a no-start, or loss of headlights and power steering. The fix is a flat nut and washers torqued to 12Nm instead of 9Nm, free at a dealer.
Engine warning lights
Some cars had repeated warning lights, sometimes with stalling or misfiring. PistonHeads names low fuel pressure, spark plugs or coils, and faulty sensors as the causes.
Oil cooler hoses
A recall covers DBX707s built September 2022 to July 2024, where the oil cooler hoses could split and starve the engine of oil. Confirm it was done.
Air suspension
Bellows can lose pressure and leave the car sitting unevenly after a night, and worn mounts can knock. Rear suspension also has an April 2026 recall for a torque reaction link pin that can slip and crack the lower arm.
Gearbox and steering
Some torque-converter gearbox issues have been reported, and a software update dealt with harsh or hesitant shifts. Steering wheel wobble hit some 2021 cars, and steering column assemblies were replaced under a technical service bulletin.
Front driveline fasteners
A 2021 recall covers loose front propshaft and differential fasteners that can cost you front-wheel drive or stall the engine.
Trim and small faults
Owners' forums report headlight condensation, air-con failure, mirrors that will not fold and premature leather wear on the driver's seat. Auto Thoughts mentions accidental boot opening, which dealers can apparently recode.
What to check on a used DBX
Start with the overnight ride-height check, since the air suspension is a known weak point.
- Leave the car overnight if the seller allows it, then see whether it sits level on its air suspension.
- Measure battery voltage with the engine off, since CarChecker reads anything under 12.4V as a weak battery.
- Check the car's recall status with Aston Martin and NHTSA, especially the fusebox, oil cooler and rear torque link campaigns.
- Ask for full dealer or authorized specialist service history, and book a pre-purchase inspection.
- Listen for knocking from the suspension mounts over bumps and when turning.
- Test every infotainment function, and note which generation of system the car has.
- Operate the electric tailgate, the mirror folding and the air-con.
- Check door trims and handles for looseness, and look closely at panel fit, paint and interior finish, as these can be off even on low-mileage cars.
- Inspect the driver's seat bolster and the steering wheel for wear.
- Drive for harsh or hesitant gearshifts and any steering wheel wobble, and ask whether software updates were applied.
DBX running costs
Auto Express says a DBX needs a service each year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, with the first three included at no charge. Its UK figures put the fourth service at £2,160 for the DBX and £2,375 for the DBX707. After that the DBX runs £2,400, £1,680 and £660 for services five to seven, while the 707 runs £760, £3,580 and £560. Note how uneven those bills are: the 707's sixth service is the largest on either list.
Auto Express gives official fuel economy as just under 20mpg and puts every DBX in insurance group 50. For the air suspension, CarChecker quotes €1,500 to €2,500 per corner for new struts at a dealer, with a failed compressor adding €800 to €1,200. Those are European figures, not UK or US ones, so treat them as a rough guide to the scale of the bill if a strut goes on a US car.
DBX recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists six recall campaigns for 2021 to 2027 DBX models. Four involve driving safety or the drivetrain: battery fusebox cables that can loosen (2021-2024 DBX), oil cooler hoses that may burst on 2023-2024 DBX707s, loose front propshaft and differential fasteners on 2021 cars, and a rear suspension torque reaction link pin on 2021-2026 cars. The others cover a tire pressure warning light that may not illuminate on 2025-2026 cars and missing headliner foam blocks on 2021 cars. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, one about seat belts and one about structure. They are reports, not proven faults.
NHTSA recalls for the DBX
Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2021 to 2027 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Our verdict
Find a DBX707, ideally a post-April 2024 facelift car with the better infotainment. If an earlier car is the choice, take a slightly newer one and pick the spec carefully, since colors and carbon packs are what buyers favor. PistonHeads says early teething troubles should have been cured by service bulletins or recalls, which is why paperwork matters here.
Insist on proof that the fusebox and rear torque link work was done, and on a battery that holds above 12.4V. A DBX with every recall completed is reasonably dependable, according to CarChecker and UsedCarStats. One that sits lopsided after a night on its air suspension is the one to walk away from. Rivals worth a look first are in our best used luxury SUVs list.

DBX: common questions
What is the best DBX to buy?
A DBX707 is the one to find, and a facelift car from April 2024 on has the better infotainment. The 707 is the more popular version and has more power, a wet-clutch gearbox and carbon-ceramic brakes. Whichever you pick, spec and recall history matter more than the year.
What goes wrong with the DBX?
Electrical trouble, air suspension and recall items are the main concerns. A weak battery can upset windows, locks and mirrors, and the fusebox cable recall can cause stalling. Air struts can leak down overnight, and some cars had engine warning lights, gearbox software problems or steering wheel wobble.
Is the DBX reliable?
Mostly, once recalls are done. CarChecker and UsedCarStats call the V8 strong and say the problems centre on electrics, build quality and air suspension. Check recall completion and service history before buying.
How much does it cost to run a DBX?
Expect UK service prices from Auto Express of £2,160 for the fourth DBX service and £2,375 for the 707, after three free ones. Fuel economy is just under 20mpg. CarChecker puts air strut replacement at €1,500 to €2,500 per corner at a dealer.
How much is a used DBX?
Asking prices for the 132 cars we track for sale right now run from $68,500 to $270,411, with a median of $127,199. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the DBX been recalled?
NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 2021 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for suspension. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
